Mr. Liu Renge lived in Kuaidamao Town, Tonghua County, Jilin Province. Officers from the Tonghua County Domestic Security Division arrested him on June 28th, as he was going to Ying'ebu Town to deliver Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution. He was taken to the county's detention centre the same day and died in police custody three weeks later, on July 22nd. During his detention, the police refused to allow his family to visit him.

Tonghua County 610 Office agents (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) and police department officers took Mr. Liu's body to the Tonghua City Funeral Parlour before informing his family of his death. They called them to identify his body. Mr. Liu's family received the notice at noon on July 22nd. When his child asked how his father had died, a police officer replied, “At around 6:00 p.m. on July 21st, Domestic Security Division officers took Mr. Liu from the detention centre to the county's Domestic Security Division to interrogate him. The interrogation ended at 4:00 a.m. on July 22nd.” He said he didn't know when Mr. Liu was sent back to the detention centre. Mr. Liu's family then asked exactly when he died. The officer said, “At 10:00 a.m. on July 22nd.”

When asked if Mr. Liu was physically abused or mistreated during the interrogation, the police officer just said that he had undergone some kind of corporal punishment. Then his family asked for all video recordings from Mr. Liu's detention and his interrogation, up until he died. The police officer only played a short video, and explained what they were looking at: The camera faced an entrance; a cell in the detention centre. As soon as two men carried Mr. Liu through the door, he collapsed. Then the video ended. When Mr. Liu's family asked to see the video recordings before and after that episode, the police officer said, “All previous videos are corrupted.”

Ever since Mr. Liu's body was taken to the funeral parlour, two vans with more than ten plainclothes police officers have watched over it. Tonghua County Domestic Security Division and the Tonghua County 610 Office agents threatened Mr. Liu's family and prohibited his relatives and friends from seeing his remains. The police refused to name who was responsible for Mr. Liu's death and his funeral.

Mr. Liu's remains were transferred to the cold storage room on the evening of July 24th.
