Ms. Zhao Shuhui, in her 60s from Beijing, died as a result of physical abuse and mental torment under the persecution by the Chinese Communist Party.

Ms. Zhao started practising Falun Gong in March 1996, and experienced improvements to her health. After the onset of the persecution of Falun Gong, in 2000 Ms. Zhao appealed for justice for Falun Gong in Tianmen Square, Beijing. She was arrested and detained for more than 20 days. The police brutally beat her, giving her a concussion.

Ms. Zhao was arrested again at home in March 2006, and subjected to two years of forced labour. While being held in Beijing Women's Forced Labour Camp, she developed symptoms of cerebral thrombosis and diabetes as a result of physical abuse and mistreatment. She was unable to take care of herself. With her family's strong requests, the labour camp officials released her on medical parole.

After being released from the forced labour camp, local police officers often harassed her at home. They forcibly took her away from her home prior to the Olympics in 2008, and took her to a brainwashing facility.

Due to the repeated arrests and harassment by the authorities, Ms. Zhao's mental and physical health continued to worsen. She passed away on May 2nd, 2011.
