In 2009 and 2010, camp guards Han Jianhua, Li Lijuan, and Wang Kun from Shandong Province No.1 Women's Forced Labour Camp actively participated in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

In an attempt to force practitioners to renounce their belief, newly sentenced practitioners were put in solitary confinement, with two inmates assigned to monitor one practitioner 24 hours a day. Han Jianhua forced practitioners to watch videos defaming Falun Gong everyday. Those who refused to renounce their belief were kept in solitary confinement for long periods of time, denied use of the toilet, and forced to sit on a small plastic stool for over 20 hours a day. During this time they were not allowed to move even a little bit or else they would be kicked and beaten. Sitting on the plastic stool for long periods of time made some practitioners' bottoms start to fester.

Practitioners in the camp were made to do extensive hard labour. Ms. Qiao Xingxia from Jining City in Shandong lost a lot of weight after spending over a month in solitary confinement. Since she was not allowed to wash for a long time, she developed pustules that caused extreme pain. However, she was still forced to work for long hours everyday.

Guard Kong Yanxia was in charge of the hard labour work and set high daily quotas for practitioners to meet. Practitioners were sometimes forced to take their unfinished work back to their cells to finish.

Practitioners were not allowed to talk to each other while working. When Ms. Cui Yuling from Liaocheng City spoke to Ms. Zhang Chenglan once, guard Wang Kun forced both of them to stand for half the day, despite Ms. Cui's feet being badly swollen from having to sit on a stool for long periods of time. When Wang Kun asked them what they were talking about, both of them refused to answer. Wang became angry and had their terms in the camp extended.

When Ms. Zheng Wenxia from Heze City went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution, Wang Kun ordered inmates Liu Mei and Li Shuang to torture her. They brutally forced fed her and put unknown drugs into her food. They also gave her IV injections and tied her to a death bed. Ms. Zhang became emaciated and was in critical condition. She was released because officials at the camp did not want to take responsibility if she died there.

Ms. Wang Hongmei from Linyi City refused to renounce her belief and was put in solitary confinement for a long time. She was forced to work very long hours and was often unable eat or sleep well. Ms. Wang was not allowed to phone her family or buy basic toiletries at the camp. Her term was also repeatedly extended.

Ms. Hu Xiulan's health deteriorated and she had extremely high blood pressure due to the long-term forced labour. Her term at the camp was also extended.

Ms. Liu Yuzhen from Jinan City was put in solitary confinement because she refused to renounce her belief. She was also forced to stand or sit still on a small stool for long periods of time, and was sometimes forced to work long hours. When Ms. Liu's term expired in September 2010, an official from the Jinan 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) met her at the camp gate. She was immediately taken to the Liuchangshan Brainwashing Centre in Jinan. She was released one month later.

Ms. Zhang Guangxia from Binzhou City was tied to a death bed1 because she refused to renounce her belief. Her hands and feet were badly injured. She developed so many blisters that she had difficulty walking. Her prison term was also extended.

Note

1. "Death Bed" torture: A practitioner is tied to a bed with his hands handcuffed above his head to the bed rails, and his legs tied with thin nylon ropes. The rope is then tightly wrapped around the practitioner's body and the bed, from his legs to his chest. The rope is wrapped so tightly that the practitioner has difficulty breathing and eventually loses consciousness.
