Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Du Juan is currently being held in Ward No.8 at the Beijing Women's Prison. She suffers from advanced breast cancer, and her physical condition is in full compliance with conditions for medical parole. After the cancer cells spread all over her body, officials from the Beijing Women's Prison and Bureau of Prison Administration still refused to release her. They first declared that Ms. Du could be released on medical parole, but the application would take three months. Later, they produced another excuse for not releasing her, saying that no hospital can cure her. While they've delayed, Ms. Du's condition has deteriorated. Her mentally retarded son is waiting for his mother to return home, and her elderly father has become depressed and helpless.

If Ms. Du can be immediately released on medical parole, she may have a chance to survive. Why do the prison authorities refuse to release her? Do they really have utter disregard for her life?

Ms. Du was physically healthy when she was taken to the prison, but in less than one year, she has experienced such a horrendous change. We can't help wondering what caused this. According to practitioners who have been released from the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) prisons and forced labour camps and some insiders, the prisons and forced labour camps abuse Falun Gong practitioners who refuse to be “reformed” [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] with various torture methods: such as force-feeding practitioners with unknown drugs, sleep deprivation, beatings and physical abuse and mental torment. These methods of torture and mistreatment seriously harm practitioners both physically and mentally. Ms. Zhang Chunfang and Ms. Geng Jin'e developed symptoms of serious illnesses and died in Ward No.4 when they were held in the Beijing Women's Prison.

We call upon the international community to pay attention to and investigate Ms. Du's situation and the real cause of her illness. All related personnel in the Beijing Women's Prison and Bureau of Prison Administration must be held accountable for her terminally ill condition.
