Mr. Huang Yuxuan, a practitioner from Baise City, Guangxi Province, was sentenced to five years in prison in March 2008, and has been imprisoned at Litang Prison for over three years now. He is currently in critical condition. His wife requested the prison authorities release him for medical treatment, but was turned down without any valid reason. Below is her account of his persecution.

My husband was in perfect health at the time he was detained. Prior to his sentencing and imprisonment, he earned a living by driving a motorcycle taxi. He helped do chores around the house, including heavy manual labour. He was the backbone of our family. However, he was hospitalized at Litang Prison from July-August 2010.

On September 7th, 2010, I was shocked when I saw him at the family visitation because I couldn't recognize him. He was in a wheelchair and looked extremely weak—he could hardly pick up the telephone handset. He was clearly struggling and on the verge of death. Two prison doctors stood behind him holding emergency kits in their hands. This made me scared because I couldn't stand to lose my husband. After talking for only a few minutes, he couldn't continue. It is hard for others to imagine what I was feeling at that moment.

As my husband's condition worsened, he was transferred to the General Hospital of Guangxi Provincial Prisons (also known as Maoqiao Hospital) in Nanning City on September 17th, 2010. After getting the notification, I went to the hospital immediately to see him. He was on the sixth floor; he was still in a wheelchair and couldn't walk by himself.

My whole family and I were upset that he was in such a severe condition and we couldn't help him. We went to see him again at the hospital on October 12th. He told us to be prepared for his death and funeral. My heart was shattered by his words. How could I continue living without him?

I went to Maoqiao Hospital on December 22nd, 2010, but didn't see him. The doctor told me that he had been transferred back to Litang Prison the day before.

As Huang Yuxuan's wife, I couldn't stand the prison authorities doing nothing to help him. I wrote a report to the Litang Prison authorities, including the prison warden, the education division, and the executive division on October 14th, 2010, to request that my husband be released for medical treatment since the prison hospital couldn't help him. The prison authorities responded on November 2nd and denied my request.

As his wife, I feel extremely sad and hurt whenever I think about him suffering in prison while I can't be by his side to accompany him. I boarded the train on March 26th, 2011 again and arrived at Litang Prison on the morning of March 27th. When I saw him, his condition was the same as a few months before and he needed others to hold onto him so he could walk.

I hereby appeal to all government authorities to re-examine his health condition and the medical treatment he received, and also grant my request for him to get medical treatment.
