Ms. Niu Yan went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on January 29th, 2000. She was arrested at Tiananmen Square. Police officers from Benxi, Liaoning Province, later escorted her back to her home town from Beijing. She was detained there in the Huanren Detention centre for 15 days.

In the summer of 2000, Ms. Niu and other practitioners were watching Falun Gong videotapes at home for which they were reported to the police. Officers from Huanren County broke into the home and took away all the practitioners. Ms. Niu was detained in the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp for one year.

Ms. Niu was arrested in Xinbin County, Fushun, by Jin Fengguang and other domestic security agents in August 2001. In 2002, the Xinbin Court sentenced her to seven years in prison. In March 2003, she was sent to the Liaoning Women’s Prison.

In the Ninth Division of Liaoning Women’s Prison, Ms. Niu was forced into slave labour. She worked from 6:00 a.m to midnight. Two criminal inmates monitored her at all times.

The prison did not allow Falun Gong practitioners to talk. One day, Ms. Niu spoke to another person in the toilet. As a result, the guards would not allow her and the two prisoners monitoring her to use water. They also deprived her of the use of the toilet facilities.

On one occasion, the guards found that Ms. Niu had a handwritten copy of some of Falun Gong articles, so they shocked her mouth, face, and neck with electric batons for more than ten minutes. Ms. Niu was then forced to continue working in the workshop.

One day in 2006, the guards again found Falun Gong articles in Ms. Niu's possession. They called her to the office, tied her hands behind her back, sealed her mouth with tape, and shocked her with electric batons, then forced her to sit on a small stool for an extended period of time.

Under the brutal persecution, Ms. Niu Yan was “transformed” [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] by force. Afterwards, she felt very ill and dizzy. She realised she did wrong to cooperate with “transformation.” Because she could not find paper and pen, she cut her finger and wrote a solemn declaration in her blood, stating she would continue to practise Falun Gong.
