Why Would Anyone Want to “Reform” Such a Great Student?

Ms. Yan Aimei, a tailor, lived a hard life. She and her family lacked even the bare essentials, such as cooking oil, salt, a change of clothes, and shoes. She was seriously sick for six months, during which time she could not eat or sleep and became blind. However, only three days after she practised Falun Gong all of her illnesses disappeared.

Her son, Yi Song, who was eleven then, witnessed the wonders of Falun Gong and also started to practise cultivation. He tried to follow the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. He began to have more concern for his parents and grandparents, taking care of his younger brother and becoming more diligent in school.

Both Yi Song and his younger brother eventually became college students. Moreover, Yi Song was admitted to graduate school at Changzhou University.

Since Yi Song knew what it was like to be poor, he tried to save money for his parents. He spent only about 200 yuan1 a month to live. Every day, he had breakfast for one-yuan and lunch and dinner for three yuan each, and he never complained. During his four years of college, he always wore the only pair of socks his mother had made him and never wasted money on a new pair. By the time he got to graduate school, his socks were all but worn out, but he still asked his mother to mend them for him.

Yi Song was an intelligent student and received many awards. He loved studying, and from the time he was in elementary school, he had been learning by himself from his textbooks every night. In high school, he stayed up till midnight reviewing the day's topics. In college, if it was too noisy in his dorm, he would go study in the classroom. If the classroom was not quiet, he would go to the library or somewhere else to continue studying. On Chinese New Year, after he finished all his chores, he returned to his room and continued studying.

In college and graduate school, almost every student had a boyfriend or girlfriend. Most would rent an apartment and live together. However, Yi Song focused on his academic career instead of finding a girlfriend.

Today's moral standards are declining rapidly. Yi Song, who follows the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, refrains from inappropriate behaviour. In China, the persecution of Falun Gong launched by Jiang Zemin has lasted over 12 years. Countless Chinese people are poisoned by the regime's lies and believe the slander the government-controlled media circulates about Falun Gong. Being a Falun Gong practitioner, Yi Song feels that it is his responsibility to tell his classmates the facts about Falun Gong and the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

On March 22nd, Yi Song was arrested by personnel from Changzhou 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong), Changzhou State Security Bureau, and the security section of Changzhou University. Every day, at least four police officers monitor him around the clock. Moreover, the leaders, teachers, and students of Changzhou University have been told to talk to Yi Song to try to persuade him to give up practising Falun Gong. In addition, the police officers contacted the 610 Office in Macheng, Yi Song's hometown. As a result, his father had a discussion with him. His father is not a Falun Gong practitioner, but his mother is. When his mother came all the way from home to visit Yi Song, Ji Liming, head of the local 610 Office, swore at her non stop. She was denied a meeting with her son. Furthermore, she was threatened and videotaped.

Yi Song's mother pleaded with Ji Liming to allow her to see her son. She said, “You are also a father, so you can understand how I long to see my son. If I can have just one glimpse of him, my mind will be at ease. Please!” Ji Liming said, “No way! I am a representative of the Chinese Communist Party. I am not talking to you as a father. Forget it!”

His mother also tried to talk to the security section at Changzhou University. She said, “My son is now being brainwashed. He has not gone to class for such a long time and his future will be totally ruined. If the mental pressure is too great, we do not know what will happen. I cannot accept the fact that our family is going to be destroyed. Please let him return to class.” They replied, “Mr. Ji does not care about his academic career. What he cares about mostly is how to change your son's mind. We are going to use every method imaginable to try to change his mind.”

Why does the 610 Office want to change such a great student? And what does it want him to change into?
