LONDON—HRH Princess Michael of Kent was among the special guests at the opening night of Shen Yun Performing Arts at The London Coliseum, on April 5.

At a reception after the show, the Princess briefly addressed the audience of around 180 guests, saying it was a “great honour and a pleasure” to be there and that she was “completely obsessed” with Chinese culture.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts mission is to “restore 5,000 years of divinely-inspired Chinese culture” that was nearly wiped out under communist rule.

Featuring classical Chinese dance and music, the show presents a dazzling array of colour, sounds, and traditional tales of wisdom and virtue.

A unique feature is the Shen Yun Touring Company Orchestra, which combines Western and Eastern instruments to great effect.

Princess Michael was particularly moved by the solo two-stringed erhu performance, also known as the Chinese violin.

“I think you will all agree with me that this one instrument haunts me,” she said, “this erhu instrument ... I am completely enchanted with this."

“I do hope there is a recording of your wonderful erhu player, and it will haunt me and make me remember this marvellous evening.”

“Thank you so much for bringing this Shen Yun to us here in London,” she concluded enthusiastically.
