Ms. Luan Guizi from Jiamusi, Heilongjiang Province died in 2010 after she had suffered many years of persecution. She was subjected to forced labour twice. Ms. Luan went to Beijing twice to appeal for the right to practise Falun Gong after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started to persecute practitioners in 1999. She was subjected to three years of forced labour after she was arrested during her second appeal in Beijing. She was imprisoned at the Jiamusi Forced Labour Camp. She was forced to work extremely long hours on highly physically demanding labour, and had to eat dirty soup and food which was usually fed to animals. Her bedding was made from hazardous materials. To protest the persecution, Ms. Luan refused to work and went on a hunger strike. The guards ordered inmates to force-feed her with brine and defected milk powder. They beat and tortured her. While under both mental and physical torture, she denounced her belief. Although she openly resumed her practice several months later, she never fully recovered from the experience.

After her three-year prison term was finished, Zhang, director of the Qiaonan Police Station, and Wang, the secretary of the Political and Judiciary Office of the Xiangyang District, arrested her and imprisoned her at the Jiamusi Detention Centre. When Ms. Luan refused to sign the detention papers, the political instructor of the Qiaonan Police Station said, “Signing or not doesn't matter. The law is not in effect when dealing with Falun Gong practitioners.”

While she was visiting another practitioner, Ms. Yuan Yuqin, on December 23rd, 2008, Ms. Luan was arrested by the officers from the Xinhua Police Station in the Jiamusi University. The officers took them to a health centre for mothers and children and tried to force them to undergo a physical. They refused. The officers covered Ms. Luan's face with her down coat and dragged her to an exam bed. She nearly suffocated. The officers finally gave up on the physical exam, but detained them overnight in the police station.

Years of persecution deeply damaged her body and mind. Ms. Luan Guizi's health deteriorated and she passed away in 2010.
