Between February 26th and March 5th, 2011, both Mr. Qin Yuming and Mr. Yu Yungang were tortured to death. On the morning of March 8th. Mr. Liu Chuanjiang, who was 55 years old, was tortured to death by officers in Jiamusi Prison. All three were Falun Gong practitioners.

Mr. Liu had been arrested and detained in Jiamusi Prison twice. Both times, he was beaten, and he was in a bad state of emaciation. During forced brainwashing sessions in 2011, he was tortured to death.

1. First Time in the Prison

On May 11th, 2002, while Mr. Liu Chuanjiang and other practitioners were handing out Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution were reported to the police. They were arrested and detained, and Chang Anzhong, a political instructor from Wuyiling District Police Station, and 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) agents bribed a criminal by the last name of Lei to cruelly torture Mr. Liu. They forced him to sit on a tiger bench1 for three days and nights and deprived him of sleep.

After that episode of torture, Mr. Liu was sentenced to four years imprisonment. He was taken to Xianglan Forced Labour Camp in Jiamusi City and later transferred to Jiamusi Prison.

At 9 a.m., on October 20th, 2003, the person in charge of the team in Jiamusi Prison tried to force him to shave his head and wear a prisoner's uniform. Mr. Liu refused to be treated like a criminal and said, "Falun Gong practitioners are good people. It is wrong to put us in here. We have not committed any crimes." Without saying anything, Officer Chang walked up to him and slapped his face on both sides and then police officer Sui Jin pushed Mr. Liu to the ground and kicked him.

At 1 p.m. that same day, guard Teng Qining forced him to go to the brainwashing sessions, also known as "study classes." When he refused to go, Teng beat him badly. After he was beaten over and over, he developed frequent headaches, dizziness, and nausea and couldn't eat. Whenever he tried to eat he’d vomit. As a result he became emaciated, and couldn't take care of himself. Mr. Liu also had two criminals watching him day and night.

On January 26th, 2004, Mr. Liu fainted a couple of times, so he was taken to the hospital. He was told that he was fine and there was nothing wrong with him. It was very clear to everyone that he had arrived in his condition from been tortured and his life was in grave danger, yet the guards disregarded these facts. Prisoners often said: "Not until you are at death's door will you be released." This was said to warn families and Falun Gong practitioners to give up practising.

2. Second Time in Prison

On the evening of July 26th, 2008, Mr. Liu was arrested again. On November 5th of the same year, he was sentenced by Wuyiling Court in Yichun City under orders from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and taken to Jiamusi Prison.

As soon as Mr. Liu entered the building of No.2 Section in the prison, guards searched him and took everything he had brought with him, including two basins and some gloves. About a dozen people were admitted to the prison at the same time as Mr. Liu. As soon as they had been searched, they were taken down to the cells where they were kicked and beaten and forced to squat down with their hands around their heads.

The person in charge of the intensive training ward, Yu Yifeng; associate political instructor Shen Qingxin; and the person in charge of the No.2 ward rewarded inmate Kang Yujun for watching Mr. Liu. Yu Yifeng, a person by the last name of Zhang, Xu Liang; and several other prisoners tried to force Mr. Liu to write a Repentance Statement to renounce practising Falun Gong. Mr. Liu refused to write it.

Later, Xu Liang, another person in charge of the Intensive Training Team, called Mr. Liu to his office and demanded that he write the Repentance Statement, but Mr. Liu still refused to write it. Xu then ordered Kang Yujun to torture him. He slapped his face and made him squat for a long time.

Six days later, prisoner Kang Yujun had Mr. Liu come to his cell, where he tried to frighten him into writing a Repentance Statement. When he refused to do it again, Kang beat him until his hands and feet were bruised. Then Kang pulled out a pair of size 42 sneakers with plastic bottoms and began to hit his face. Kang was soon exhausted so he took a break, then hit Mr. Liu again, then he took another break and hit him again. Kang did this back and forth a few times. Mr. Liu’s face swelled up and eventually he couldn't stand it, so he wrote the statement under duress.

Soon after, the cadre from the Prison Education Transformation Division wanted to see if Mr. Liu had written the Repentance Statement of his own volition. An officer from the ward by the last name of Zhang warned Mr. Liu that if anyone from the Education Transformation Division came to him to ask him about this, he should say that he did. Mr. Liu responded by saying that it was not from his true heart. Seeing that Mr. Liu did not comply with what he said, Kang took him to a cell and beat him twice.

Towards the end March of 2009, the team leader of the No.2 Sub-Division of the No.4 Ward had Mr. Liu come to the guards' room. Feng Zhongqing, the deputy head of the Education Transformation Division, and another officer by the last name of Du were there. Feng asked Mr. Liu, “Did you write the Repentance Statement voluntarily?” He responded, “They forced me to write it. I have already made my declaration that it was invalid.”

Both Feng and officer Du told Mr. Liu to say that that he had written it voluntarily. When he refused, the two guards used their electric batons to beat and shock him. In order to get them to stop, he hit his head against an iron cabinet and his head bled profusely. [Please note: What Mr. Liu did was a direct result of the brutal persecution. Practitioners should not adopt drastic measures.)

3. Tortured to Death

On February 21st, 2011, prison officers began to take practitioners to the persecution team. For every one practitioner there were many inmates to watch them. They were ordered to write the Three Statements to renounce their belief in Truth-Compassion-Forbearance, the tenants of Falun Gong.

On February 26th, Mr. Qin Yueming was tortured to death. On March 1st, Mr. Yu Yungang was tortured and ended up in a coma. On March 5th, he passed away. Dozens of police officers surrounded Mr. Yu's cell, so his relatives could not see his tortured body. They cremated his body to destroy all the evidence.

Mr. Liu was severely persecuted in Jiamusi Prison. They shocked him with four electric batons all at the same time and didn't stop until the four batons ran out of power. They cruelly tortured him and broke his arm. When he was transferred from the Intensive Training Team to the No. 3 Sub-Division of the No.3 Ward, the guards had four inmates watch him. When he was using the washroom, they saw that parts of his bottom were badly injured as a direct result of being shocked with electric batons.

Around 10 p.m. on March 7th, 2011, Mr. Liu was taken to the emergency room at Jiamusi Prison Hospital. He couldn't breathe and the officers requested oxygen for him. A doctor said, “He won’t survive for much longer—we cannot save him. Since we only have a limited supply of oxygen, it would make no difference to him even if we were to give it to him.”

At 1 a.m. on March 8th, 2011 Mr. Liu died in hospital. At around 2 a.m., his body was transferred to the mortuary. It was said by insiders that between March 9th and 10th, many officers showed up in the No.3 Ward. When Mr. Liu was almost dead as a result of torture, in order to cover up the facts, the guards transported his body back to the No.3 Ward and told all the prisoners that he had had a heart attack.

Unfortunately, Mr. Liu's family members believed the lies the guards had made up. After Mr. Liu’s family saw the "emergency treatment" video that the guards showed to them, they agreed to sign the paperwork to have Mr. Liu's body cremated. On March 10th, his body was cremated. Officials from Jiamusi Prison stated that they would pay 200,000 yuan2 to his family members, but to this date they have never received a penny. It was also a ploy to destroy any evidence of the torture Mr. Liu had been subjected to. Once the body was cremated there could be no investigation.

Note

1. "Tiger Bench": Prisoners are forced to sit on a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall with their knees tied together. With their hands tied behind their backs or sometimes placed on their knees, they are forced to sit straight up and look straight ahead without movement for long periods of time.

2. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
