Ms. Kang Huili started to practise Falun Gong in 1999. During the last decade, she has been harassed, brainwashed, detained, and persecuted in other ways under the direction of officials from Licun Government, the local detention centre, and the Public Security Bureau in Luquan City.

Before Ms. Kang started to practise Falun Gong, she was in poor health. She developed hypertension, and she could hardly move the left side of her body. During the summer of 1999, after practicing Falun Gong for only several days, all of her illnesses disappeared. She realized that she should become a good person and live according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. She felt very happy, but those happy days did not last long. Shortly after she started practising, the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started.

Detained in a Local Detention Centre

On the evening of July 14th, 2000, Zhang Hequn of a local detention centre and several others went to Ms. Kang’s home and tried to force her to write a guarantee statement to renounce practising Falun Gong, but she refused. The next day, Zhang Hequn and others took Ms. Kang to the local detention centre, where she was detained for a whole day. She was then taken to the detention centre in Luquan City and held for another 16 days.

When the police interrogated her, she said, “Falun Gong gives people good health and teaches them to become good.” In response, an officer slapped her twice, and her mouth started to bleed. He also forced Ms. Kang to stand still for a long time until she fainted. Du Bin even strapped her head and face with ropes.

Arrested and Fined

On May 29th, 2001, Zhang Hequn from the Licun Detention Centre instigated several others to break into Ms. Kang’s home again. They took her to the home for the aged in Licunzhen and persecuted her by brainwashing. Ms. Kang went on a hunger strike to oppose the persecution. Zhang Xinyong, the CCP committee secretary, extorted 10,000 yuan1 from Ms. Kang’s brother-in-law and then allowed her family to take her back home.

Detained at the Brainwashing Centre in Luquan City

At the end of 2001, because Ms. Kang and another practitioner went to Tienanmen Square to appeal for Falun Gong, she was arrested and taken to the Yanshan District Detention Centre. The police there struck her to the floor. Four to five men stepped on her and held her hands by force to take her fingerprints. Afterward, they locked her in a small room. She was bound tightly to a chair and her hands and feet were put in handcuffs.

The next day, Ms. Kang was picked up by officials from the local government and the Public Security Bureau in Luquan City and taken to the detention centre in that city. While in the detention centre, Ms. Kang was not allowed to practise the Falun Gong exercises. Whenever she did, they poured a big bucket full of icy water over her until her hair, cotton coat, and trousers were soaked. Ten days later, Ms. Kang was taken to the brainwashing centre in Luquan City.

Once, Ms. Kang was picked up and again taken to the brainwashing centre in Luquan City. She was not allowed to sleep and was forced to attend brainwashing sessions. Furthermore, she was force-fed by a tube inserted through her nose. As a result, her nose bled for several hours. Due to the brutal treatment, Ms. Kang developed cerebral thrombosis and her blood pressure often reached 270 mmHg. She was later released.

In the Detention Centre in Luquan City

In 2007, officials from the Licun Government, the local detention center, the Public Security Bureau, and the Bureau of Radio and Television in Luquan City broke into Ms. Kang’s home. They took away a radio, an MP3 player, exercise music tapes and videos with instructions, DVDs, a satellite antenna and receptor, and more. Among those involved were Zheng Zhimin, Zhang Shiguo, a man with the surname Wu, another with the surname Cui, and others.

She was taken to the detention centre in Luquan City. In the detention centre, Ms. Kang once sang the song “Falun Gong Is Good,” and officer Du Bin hit her in the mouth with a bunch of keys until her mouth bled. He also poured icy water on her until she was soaking wet. After being detained for 15 days, she was sent to the forced labour camp in Shijiazhuang City. But because of her high blood pressure, the officials of the forced labour camp refused to take her in.

Forced Labour

In 2008, the CCP detained many Falun Gong practitioners using “security for the Olympic Games” as an excuse. One morning in July, Ms. Kang was again picked up and taken to the detention centre in Licun Village. That afternoon, they took her to the Women's Forced Labour Camp in Shijiazhuang City and detained her for three months.

In the forced labour camp, several inmates stripped off Ms. Kang’s clothes and tried to force her to wear a labour camp uniform. She said, “I am not a criminal and I am not going to wear it.” They then beat her and did not give her any clothes to wear. At last, several other Falun Gong practitioners gave her some clothes to wear.

While in the forced labour camp, whenever Ms. Kang practised Falun Gong, she was beaten by guard Liu Ziwei. She was maltreated so severely that she developed hypertension. Her blood pressure was in the range of 150 mmHg to 250 mmHg. The police did not even let her go to the toilet.

In October, when Ms. Kang sang “Falun Gong Is Good,” she was beaten by several guards and criminals, including Liu Juan and Zhu Lirong. She was gagged with a towel and her hair was ripped out and scattered on the floor. Afterward, she was pulled into an empty room and her hands were handcuffed behind her back to one end of a bed. The guards and criminals stripped off her underwear, stuffed it into her mouth, and taped up her head and mouth for several hours.

They beat her viciously and her chest was badly injured. The police then called a doctor. After the doctor examined her heart, officials from the forced labour camp told the local detention centre to take her back.

After Ms. Kang returned from the labour camp, her blood pressure was extremely high, her heart was in poor condition, and both her hands kept twitching involuntarily.
