An Open Letter to Expose the Persecution of My Parents by Law Enforcement Authorities

My name is Wang Huan. I am a 19-year-old male. My father is Wang Zhihong, 49, and my mother is Sun Xiuxia, 49. I also have an older sister, Wang Jing. We are residents of a region that is under the jurisdiction of the Jinqian Police Station in Erdao District, Changchun City, Jilin Province. Our home is in the vicinity of the Changjiang Elementary School.

My parents are Falun Gong practitioners. On the evening of September 29th, 2009, dozens of Erdao District 610 Office agents (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) and officers from the Erdao District Police Department and the Jinqian Police Station broke into our house. They arrested my parents and confiscated personal computers, a TV, and other items. My father was detained at the Shuangyang Third Detention Centre in Changchun, and my mother was detained at the Tiebei Police Hospital.

My older sister and I have been making every effort to appeal for my parents' release. Each time we went to the police department or court to appeal, officials turned us away without justification. When we went to the hospital to visit our mother, we were first denied entry and then asked to pay bribes. Since our parents were arrested over a year ago, we have had no source of income and have been barely getting by, mostly by borrowing from friends and relatives.

After being denied visitation rights multiple times, we asked attorney Li Dunyong from Gongxin Law Firm in Beijing and attorney Ji Hongjun from Yili Law Firm in Erdao District to help us.

On September 14th, 2010, the two lawyers and I went to the Erdao District Court and requested to see the case documents for my parents. Judge Yan Hongyi denied our right to see the documents and also did not allow us to see my parents. On September 15th, we went to Shuangyang Third Detention Centre in Changchun and requested to see my father, but the executive division head told us, "Judge Yan Hongyi from Erdao District Court called us and told us not to allow you to visit." My attorneys told him that the law explicitly guarantees the right to visit. The head could not justify his actions, but still forced us to leave.

The attorneys said to me and my sister: "The Constitution does not have a single provision that states practising Falun Gong is illegal. No person, government entity or office has the right to make up a law at will without going through the proper process. Chinese citizens should have freedom of religion."

Why did law enforcement agencies knowingly violate the law? Moreover, why is there is no higher authority to oversee the due process?

Our parents were put on trial in the Erdao District Court at 6:50 a.m. on September 26th, but my sister and I were not notified by the authorities, so we didn't have the opportunity to hire a defence lawyer for their trial. In fact, we only heard about the trial a month later.
