Ms. Liu Yanqin, a Falun Gong practitioner from Fushun, Liaoning Province was sentenced to two years of forced labour in 2008. She was hung up for long periods of time, shocked with electric batons and brutally tortured in Masanjia Labour Camp. As a result of torture, she cannot bend her fingers and lift her arms. Her hair has turned completely white.

Liu Yanqin is in her fifties. In June 2008, she was arrested by officers from Tianqiao Police Station. Wang Dong and two other policemen forced Ms. Liu into a metal chair, handcuffed both her hands and legs together, pulled her hair back and started to beat her head with electric batons. Later on, they lit two cigarettes and inserted them into her nostrils. They even splashed her face with wine. She was tortured for one whole night. The next day, Ms. Liu's face was unrecognisable as a result of the torture. She was sentenced to two years of forced labour in Masanjia Labour Camp by the Qingyuan 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong).

At Masanjia Labour Camp, Liu Yanqin was locked up with six other Falun Gong practitioners. There were hanging devices in the cell that the guards installed specifically to persecute the practitioners. The practitioners were given meagre rations and had to recite the camp rules. Because Ms. Liu refused to co-operate with the demands of the guards, her term was extended by 15 days. She was hung up for eight hours with both arms stretched out to the extreme and her legs tied together with a rope. This is an extremely inhumane, cruel form of torture.

At the beginning of September 2008, because she refused to recite the labour camp rules, Ms. Liu was brought to the office. Guard Liu Yong shocked her with an electric baton, causing her arms to swell severely. They commanded her to greet them but she refused and instead shouted, "Falun Gong is good!" Consequently she was brutally beaten up by a guard surnamed Wang. Guard Peng Tao attached one end of a metal wire to her fingers and an electric baton to the other end, thereby increasing the voltage. Liu Yanqin refused to submit to their demands. Then they rubbed her nostrils with a bottle of hot mustard. She was tortured from noon to dinner time.

Ms. Liu was confined in the cell all day. She had to eat, drink, sleep and relieve herself in the same room. Ventilation was poor and no sunlight filtered through into the cell. Consequently, Ms. Liu developed scabies all over her body and she could not sleep properly. She continued to protest against the detention. During the second half of 2009, Ms. Liu took off her prison uniform as a form of protest. A female guard surnamed Pan stripped off the rest of her clothes leaving her with only her underpants. She beat Ms. Liu's head with a shoe and only stopped when she was exhausted. When Ms. Liu still refused to wear the uniform, Pan continued to torture her for two days and two nights until Liu Yanqin collapsed from exhaustion. Because she remained unconscious for a long time, the guard sent her to the hospital, where she was given unknown medication.

On New Year's Eve 2009, Ms. Liu Yanqin and Liu Shiqin were hung up for one day for refusing to wear uniforms.

In June 2010, Ms. Liu Yanqin was stripped naked and hung up by inmate Yuan Shuzhen. As a result of being hung up for long periods of time, Ms. Liu can no longer bend her fingers and lift her arms. She lost control of her hands and cannot work. Her weight went down from 50 kilos to less than 40 kilos and her hair turned white.

Other practitioners who were also severely persecuted in Masanjia Labour Camp include Sheng Lianying from Dalian (50 years old); Xia Ning from Xingcheng (53 years old); Sun Sujie (a university student); Liu Shiqin from Benxi (65 years old); and Zhang Lianying from Beijing (an accountant with a university degree).
