Huang Zongqin from the Linquan Domestic Security Division and officers from Tanpeng Town Police Station arrested Ms. Liu while she was alone at home in March 2010. She was sentenced to one year at Linquan Detention Centre.

Guards at the detention centre injected Ms Liu with unknown drugs in August 2010, saying that she had contracted pneumonia. She had difficulty breathing and started to lose the ability to use her arms and legs, after being injected with the drugs.

According to Ms. Liu's daughter, her mother did not have pneumonia. When Ms. Liu requested documentation stating that she had pneumonia, the doctor refused to give it to her.

Two days after being admitted to the Linquan People's Hospital, Ms. Liu became critically ill. As the guards were afraid of taking responsibility if she were to die, they hastily went through the process to release Ms. Liu on bail so that she could receive medical treatment. Her family members were allowed to transfer her to the Fuyang City People's Hospital, where she underwent surgery. However, she still remained in critical condition.

Ms. Liu Zhanglan was transferred to the intensive care unit in the Neurology Department at Shengli Hospital in Hefei City, Anhui Province, on October 2nd. The doctors there found that Ms. Liu had severe damage to her spinal nerves that were caused by trauma. She is still in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Shengli Hospital.

Ms. Liu's medical expenses have reached 150,000 yuan1 in the last two months, and her family are struggling to cope with the mental and financial burden.
