The sign previously hung outside the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp Women's Division read "Liaoning Province Ideological Education School." It was renamed "Liaoning Province Women's Labour Re-education Management Institute" in October 2008, and now as "Psychological Counselling School." The "school" is not meant to offer psychological counselling, but to implement brainwashing of Falun Gong practitioners, and meanwhile make the practitioners do hard labour for long hours.

Brainwashing steps

The following brainwashing steps are meant for newly incarcerated practitioners:

(1) Body search, haircut, changing into labour camp uniform and wearing a badge.

(2) Being admitted into Newly Arrivals Class, and subjected to brainwashing by ten collaborators1 for different lengths of time.

(3) It will be counted as "reformation," [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] if a practitioner signs the three statements to renounce practising Falun Gong, which means she gives up Falun Gong. She is then admitted into the New Students Class (Brainwashing Class), to undergo further brainwashing. The practitioner is forced to read books and watch videos that slander Falun Gong, and become indoctrinated with evil theories until the practitioner has a deviated understanding. She will then be taught to become a collaborator, to persecute other practitioners; if she refuses to be "reformed" she will be handed over to the guards, who will attempt to "reform" her under force. If she still refuses to be "reformed" after that, she will be assigned to a team to do labour until her term expires.

(4) "Reformed" and non-"reformed" practitioners assigned to different teams regularly receive a variety of "practice tests," featuring brainwashing attempts, exams and signing documents. Any practitioner who refuses to co-operate is verbally and physically abused and tortured.

Masanjia Forced Labour Camp's "Study," "Labour," "Food" and "Sanitation"

"Study:" The labour camp authorities implement forcible brainwashing, indoctrinate practitioners with lies, and attempt to have them give up their beliefs.

"Labour:" Work long hours. Practitioners rise at 5:00 a.m. (formerly 4:30 a.m.), work until 8:30 p.m. and then go to sleep - sometimes at 9:00 p.m. There is no day of rest. Practitioners work with toxic and harmful items. The Second Women's Camp officials saw that manufacturing armed police coats could make big money so they accepted a large number of orders in the second half of this year - the quota is more than 20,000. Officials made detainees work overtime and required them to guarantee the quality. After the coats are done, the shipping boxes carry the inscription "Made by Jihua Garments Co., Ltd." and "Xinyu Co., Ltd," when in actuality these high-quality, three-piece-set cotton-padded coats are actually made by practitioners in the Second Women's Camp of the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp.

"Food:" The cornmeal steamed buns the practitioners are supplied with are often made with mouldy corn, sometimes not fully cooked. Winter food is mostly turnip soup, and summer food is tomato soup or pumpkin soup. The practitioners are made to sing the labour camp's "Song" prior to each meal; after dinner they are made to recite the prison rules and sing the "School Song" again.

"Sanitation:" The labour camp is outwardly well-equipped and decorated. A solar energy shower toilet was built during the 2010 Chinese New Year, but detainees can only use it once a year. Other times they have to take showers using cold water, and within a limited time. Eight minutes are allotted from Monday to Friday; 15 minutes on Saturday and Sunday, which includes washing clothes. Every detainee is given a special, green-coloured face cloth in 2010 in order to deal with the provincial judicial office's inspection. But they are told the cloth is not supposed to be used, but has to be hung on the edge of their wash basin.

Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp incarcerates 147 practitioners

There are three divisions in the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp. More than 20 regular prisoners are held on the second and third floors in Division One and Two; 147 practitioners are currently housed on the fourth floor in Division Three. Since the beginning of 2007, the labour camp authorities have bought four groups of practitioners from the Beijing Dispatch Centre. They paid 300 to 500 yuan2 for each practitioner. The practitioners are made to do labour in the daytime. Those who refuse to co-operate are subjected to beatings at night. The practitioners start labour at 6:40 a.m., with no noon break, and continue until after dinner at 7:30 p.m. After returning to their cells they are often ordered to write so-called "homework," reflecting on what's on their minds. They do not have a break on Saturday or Sunday.

The most vicious guards are Zhang Lei, Zhang Jun, Zhang Zhuohui, Zhang Huan, Dong Bin and Yu Xiaochuan.

Ms. Wang Caiyun from Fushun subjected to severe abuse and torture

Ms. Wang Caiyun, 59, is from the Dongzhou District, Fushuan, Liaoning Province. Longfeng Police Station officers arrested her on October 21st, 2008 and took her to the Nangou Detention Centre, where she held a week-long hunger strike to protest the detention. She was sent to the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp on October 29th, 2008. The next day she was taken to a dark room where the guards slapped her face and shocked her with an electric baton, because her voice was too soft during roll call. She was subjected to another beating in November for refusing to recite the prison rules.

Ms. Wang was subjected to a severe "body-stretching" torture method between November 30th and December 3rd, 2009.

Note

1. "Collaborators": former practitioners who have turned against Falun Gong under brainwashing and torture. They are then made to assist in brainwashing and torturing practitioners.

2. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
