The following five descriptions are of Falun Gong practitioners from the Changling Oil Refinery in Yueyang City, Hunan Province, who have been subject to persecution.

1. Her Illnesses Healed as a Result of Practising Falun Gong, Ms. Ge Yubo Is Then Arrested, Sentenced, and Blackmailed

Ms. Ge Yubo, 67 years old, is a retired employee from Changling Oil Refinery in Yueyang City, Hunan Province. Since November 1997, she has practised Falun Gong. Prior to that, she had arthritis, stomach problems, gynaecological diseases, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other illnesses. Within two months after she started practising, all of her illnesses were healed. In addition, she went from being illiterate to being able to read through the Falun Gong book, Zhuan Falun.

In July 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to persecute Falun Gong. In September of that year, she went with another practitioner to Beijing to appeal against the persecution of Falun Gong. Tiananmen Square was heavily guarded that day. Seeing that most of the practitioners who had gone to Beijing were arrested, both of them came back. After that, out of fear of losing his job, Ms. Ge's husband reported to officials that the two had gone to Beijing. In October, both of them were arrested by officers from Yueyang City Police Bureau Changling Sub-Bureau, detained for seven days, and fined five thousand yuan. After that, they were arrested and detained in the brainwashing centre in their factory by people from the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong).

On April 13th, 2005, when Ms. Ge was handing out distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong, she was arrested by officers from Louqu Police Sub-Bureau in Yueyang, and then held in Hubin Detention Centre for ten days.

On October 5th, 2005, Ms. Ge was arrested by several plainclothes officers from Yunxi Police Sub-Bureau in Yueyang City where she lived, a Yueyang residential area in Changling City. She was detained in the Yueyang County Detention Centre for more than two months. On December 31st, she was released from detention but sentenced to two and a half years, with four years to be served outside. In order to reduce her term, her three sons bribed officials with a total of 170,000 yuan1. She was petrified after being detained and sentenced and spending money on bribing people. In early 2007, she suddenly developed high blood pressure and then had a stroke. After hospitalisation, she was bedridden for more than three years. Currently she can barely walk. After she was sentenced, she was only provided 300 yuan as a monthly living allowance, even though her pension income was supposed to be 1,380 yuan. In 2007, during the time she was hospitalised, they increased it to 600 yuan per month. She was also refunded 1,000 yuan, which was part of a fine collected from her. Another 4,000 yuan has not been returned. Not until 2010 was her full pension income resumed.

Ms. Wen Miaoying, 70 years old, is a retired employee from Changling Oil Refinery. In 1997 she began to practice Falun Dafa. Prior to that, she had rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and displaced cervical vertebra, and suffered from swelling and other diseases. After she began to practise Falun Gong, she healed gradually. In order to speak the truth about Falun Gong, on September 8th, 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal to the government. After arriving, she saw that it was heavily guarded and had to return home. After that, she was slandered by others and was arrested by several officers from Changling Police Sub-Bureau teamed with people from the 610 Office of the Changling Oil Refinery. Her home was ransacked. She was detained for three days, fined 5,000 yuan, and blackmailed for 600 yuan. After she returned home, she was arrested by people from the 610 Office of the Changling Oil Refinery and detained in a brainwashing centre, where she was held for more than 70 days.

At 8 a.m. one day towards the end of September, 2005, she was suddenly arrested by people from the 610 Office of the Changling Oil Refinery and Yueyang Police Bureau Yunxi Police Sub-Bureau. Her home was ransacked. A political instructor by the surname of Li took notes, and a female police officer by the surname of Wang asked questions. When Ms. Wen refused to answer her questions, Wang grabbed Ms. Wen's right shoulder and left a five-finger print on it. Later they took Ms. Wen to the detention centre, where they refused to accept her, so after midnight, she returned home. Her family members tried to find officials who could help release her, spent more than 20,000 yuan in bribes, and wrote a Guarantee Statement to renounce practising Falun Gong on her behalf. Before that, she had a number of illnesses, such as Meniere's disease, atrophic gastritis, sinusitis, and glaucoma. After she began to practise Falun Gong, all her illnesses were healed.

On December 31st, 1999, she and five other practitioners went to Beijing to appeal to the government, with the hope that they would be able to speak out for Falun Gong. However, they were arrested on the train and detained in Handan Detention Centre in Hebei Province. Before the 2010 Chinese New Year, people from the 610 Office in Changling Oil Refinery took her back and detained her at the Yunxi Detention Centre for 15 days. Later she was arrested and detained at another brainwashing centre in Changling Oil Refinery for more than 90 days, and fined 4,000 yuan (for which she received a blank receipt).

On September 8th, 2005, Ms. Chen was arrested by 610 Office agents in the Changling Oil Refinery and Yunxi Police Sub-Bureau of Yueyang Police Station. Her home was ransacked. They confiscated her personal belongings and Falun Gong books. Two days later, she fractured her left leg and thereafter had difficulty walking. After that, she was cruelly punished for one day and night. The female guard by the surname of Wang was very abusive to her. On the evening of the 9th, she was taken and detained in Changling Detention Centre, where she was held for nine months. While she was interrogated, they made her stand for more than 10 hours, causing her leg to hurt so much that she could not sleep. Police officers demanded 500 yuan from her husband and then allowed her to go to the hospital. After the X-ray, the doctor said she had a comminuted fracture. She later found out that she had been charged 500 yuan for transportation to Yunxi Hospital. When Ms. Chen was taken to the hospital, she still had handcuffs on.

In March 2006, Ms. Chen was sentenced in Yunxi Court to two and a half years and taken to Hunan Women's Prison, where she was subjected to inhuman treatment. In August, she was transferred to a brainwashing centre. At the centre, the windows and doors were closed. Except for police officers involved in the persecution and collaborators2, nobody else was allowed to enter or exit. It was tightly guarded. Falun Gong practitioners taken there for detention were tortured both mentally and physically. At first, collaborators He Yin and a few others pretended to to be very nice to Ms. Chen. Soon enough, they ordered her to recite the rules of the prison. If she refused to recite them, she would be penalised. She was deprived of sleep, was only allowed to sleep for a short while before the sun rose, and after that, she was forced to stand up and remain standing. She was made to watch videos that slandered Falun Gong for the whole day in their attempts to brainwash and "transform" [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] her.

Ms. Chen's fractured leg had not healed, but she was still forced to stand for a long time every day. As a result, both her feet and her legs were swollen. One day, she collapsed and fell down. The collaborators saw this, picked her up, and had her stand up again. Another day, seeing the collaborators going to the washroom, she ripped off the paper on the walls and doors that had words slandering Falun Gong. Later on Ms. Chen was made to do to hard labour.
