Ms. Yuan Pingjun died less than10 days after being arrested and detained at a brainwashing centre on August 2nd, 2010. The police lied, saying she died from jumping from the building, and did not allow her family to view her body except for a quick look or set up a ceremony for mourning. They tried to buy silence from her family with 100,000 yuan1. Her family hired a lawyer to seek justice for her tragic death.

Ms. Yuan was manning a sewing booth in the market. On August 2nd, Community Administration Chair Huang ran to her booth, and requested Ms. Yuan follow her to the yard nearby. Ms. Yuan's neighbouring booth owners never saw her walk out of the yard again, but saw a small van drive out. They later heard she was abducted and taken away in that van, and died 10 days after this. People could not believe such a nice lady was killed so suddenly.

On the same day, Ms. Yuan's husband Zhang Yundong saw officers Ren Xuanjun and Liu Yongqiang and some strangers break into their home after he returned home from work, and ransack the place without issuing any paper work to him. He dared not complain under the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) regime's power. Before these officers left, Ren Xuanjun asked him to pay "living expenses" for his detained wife. Zhang Yundong paid him 550 yuan. To his surprise, when he was at work on the morning of August 11th, he was notified his wife had already died in a motel located at 6411-Bolinnan Street.

Mr. Zhang saw her body at the motel at 9 a.m., on August 11th, with a bloody hole on the back of her skull. The body was cold. He asked how she died. They said she fell from the fifth floor, that she committed suicide by breaking the room window with the DVD player, then jumping out. They claimed that the DVD player caused the hole in her head.

Mr. Zhang could not believe his wife would commit suicide. The window was covered with tape to prevent breaking, how could she break that window? Why would she want to commit suicide? How could the DVD player cause her head to have a bloody hole in it? The police had detained her without any paper work.

No one reported her death, since the murderers were police officers. No one arrived to investigate this case. They refused to answer any questions, including why they took her there, what happened after detaining her, and who was present when she died. Obviously these officers were lying.

Unthinkable things happened immediately after her death. Officers appeared, forcefully taking her body to the funeral home and closely guarding it, not allowing her family to go near. The autopsy was done by a forensic doctor from the Xinhua District Police Department, and determined the cause of death was from falling from the high floor above. Officers did let her family set up a mourning table to bid their final farewell, saying, "You are not allowed to cause a scene and attract attention." Plainclothes officers were assigned to watch her husband and 21-year-old son, not allowing them any contact from the outside, especially with the media. Then, the representative from Ning'an Street Police Station talked with her husband and son, offering to pay them 100,000 yuan to permit them to cremate her body quickly. One Xinhua District CCP Secretary requested Ms. Yuan Pingjun's family quickly cremate her body, and said this money is welfare, not compensation.

Mr. Yuan's family hired a lawyer, who arrived at the Ning'an Street Police Station on September 3rd. He requested to meet with officer Ren Xuanjun. The Station Director, Zhao Zhiqiang, was very nervous, and said Ren Xuanjun was on vacation. The lawyer asked, since this is a death case, if he is on vacation, who took over for Ren? Zhao had no answer. The lawyer requested to meet with CCP Director Liu Yongqiang. Zhao said Liu did not know anything.

The lawyer thinks even without these witnesses' help, just based on the facts they arrested her, detained her, resulting in her death, and they tried to buy silence with 100,000 yuan, so they should be sued for "illegal arrest" and "illegal detention," and "killing, plus buying silence."
