Ms. Li Chuanlan from Yushu City, Jilin Province, was tried in court on August 25th, 2010. The court didn't allow her to speak and hastily wrapped up the trial. Ms. Li had been arrested on April 29th, 2009, as she distributed Falun Gong materials. She was released after 56 days of detention. On June 29th, 2010, she was arrested again.

Around 2:00 p.m. on August 25th, 2010, 60 or 70 police officers with loaded guns surrounded the court, along with 20 cars, including ambulances. The presence of so many police and emergency response vehicles in the area in front of the courthouse caused a traffic jam. Many motorists expressed surprise at the large number of armed police and asked who was on trial.

Ms. Li was very weak and in a wheelchair when she was brought into the courtroom. The court only allowed two family members to attend the hearing. They were told to sit in the back and two police officers with batons stood close by, monitoring them.

The presiding judge was Shen Jiachao. He stated that on the evening of April 29th, 2009, police officer Li Wei from Heilin Town Police Station and driver Peng Xianming discovered Ms. Li was distributing Falun Gong materials. They drove to Ms. Li's house and took several Falun Gong books. Then they went to the village where Ms. Li distributed the materials and confiscated all the brochures. This was their "evidence," which Shen kept repeating. Ms. Li sat in the wheelchair and wasn't allowed to say a word to defend herself. Shortly afterwards, Shen Jiachao announced an adjournment and said that they would inform Ms. Li's family when they would hold another hearing.

It was learned that they would sentence Ms. Li in seven days, that the court wouldn't inform her family in advance, and that they planned to send Ms. Li to Heizuizi Prison. If the family paid some money the sentence might be reduced to three years, otherwise the sentence would be four or five years. Ms. Li's family was finally allowed to visit her days after she was sentenced.

Details of Ms. Li's Two Separate Arrests

At around 11:00 p.m. on April 29th, 2009, Ms. Li and another practitioner were arrested by police officer Li Wei and driver Peng Xianming for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was detained for 56 days before being released. Her sister and daughter went to look for a way to help her and spent more than 30,000 yuan1. Because Ms. Li was extremely sick and in critical condition, she was finally released the afternoon of June 24th, 2009.

Around 11:00 a.m. on June 29th, 2010, when Ms. Li was pulling weeds in the backyard, police officer Cui Guanglai and driver Peng Xianming from Heilin Town Police Station showed up and dragged her into a car, without even allowing her to change her clothes. They brought her to the police station. Later, officers from Domestic Security Division in Yushu took her to the Yushu Detention Centre.
