Ms. Xuexian Zhang was best known for her kindheartedness among her fellow villagers of Ezuo County, Liaoning Province. However, Ms. Zhang has become emaciated due to torture at Shenyang Prison.

Ms. Xuexian is a practitioner from Andeyingzi Village, Laoyemiao Town, Ezuo County, Liaoning Province. On the evening of June 9th, 2008, Ms. Zhang and her husband Mr. Yuan Xueli distributed leaflets exposing the persecution of Falun Gong to people. Li Yongtang, the secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Committee of their village, reported them to the town's police. The next evening, five police officers from the Laoyemiao Police Station broke into Ms. Zhang's house and ransacked it. They arrested Ms. Zhang. Her husband Mr. Yuan Xueli escaped and stayed away from home.

Ms. Zhang Xuexian was held at the Ezuo County Detention Centre. She was transferred to the Shenyang Prison in January 2009, and sentenced to a four-year prison term.

Mr. Yuan Xueli was homeless for more than 3 months. For him to be able to return home, his relatives had to pay 4,000 yuan1 to the Public Security Bureau. However, after he returned home, he was arrested anyway and taken to the Laoyemiao Town Police Station. He was beaten brutally with electric batons, and the officers extorted 3,000 yuan before they released him.

Ms. Zhang Xuexian suffered inhuman torture in the prison and no longer looks like a healthy person.
