Before the persecution started, Mr. Zhang Aiquan, a Falun Gong practitioner who was employed as a Class III police commissioner in the Traffic Police Group of Binhai Police Bureau at Shengli Oil Field in Shandong Province, lived a happy life with his wife and daughter. Ms. Wang Mingyun, Mr. Zhang's wife, was employed in the Inspection Team of the Dongxin Oil Production Factory at Shengli Oil Field. Their daughter was studying in high school at the time. They lived in the residential community of the Traffic Police Team of Binhai Police Bureau.

After July 20th, 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started persecuting Falun Gong, Mr. Zhang and his wife were arrested, sentenced to forced labour and prison terms, and had their home ransacked.

In July 2000, Qu, the head of the Hit Team, Field Branch of Binhai Police Bureau, took more than 40 police officers to Mr. Zhang's home and arrested him. They ransacked his home and took him to the Shengli Oil Field Binhai Detention Centre. In the meantime, Ms. Wang was arrested by officers from the Bindong Branch of Binhai Police Bureau and taken to the Shihua Hotel (now closed) of the Shengli Oil Field Well Logging Company, where she was detained for more than a month.

Officials from the Binhai Police Bureau soon fired Mr. Zhang and transferred him to the Inspection Team of Dongxin Oil Production Factory at the oil field. In September 2000, Mr. Zhang was sentenced to three years of forced labour and taken to Wangcun Forced Labour Camp in Shandong Province.

After Mr. Zhang was released from the camp, officers from the labour camp frequently made threatening calls to his home. Officers from the Shengli Oil Field Binhai Police Bureau arranged undercover agents to contact him and collect personal information from him. Mr. Zhang was still regarded as a key target by the Binhai Police Bureau.

On the afternoon of May 13th, 2005, officers from the Huantai County Police Bureau and Binhai Police Station in Shandong Province arrested Mr. Zhang while he was on his way home. Actually, they had followed him for many days, arranged plainclothes police to secretly observe his home, and finally found informational materials about Falun Gong and the persecution in Mr. Zhang's car. At approximately 8:00 p.m. that same day, Mr. Zhang's wife, Ms. Wang, was arrested. Mr. Zhang and Ms. Wang were later taken to the Huantai County Police Station.

Police officers at the Huantai County Police Bureau interrogated the couple by using torture. They beat them and tied them to a dead person's bed1 for more than a month. Mr. Zhang was forced to say he was guilty for telling people the facts about the persecution of Falun Gong. The police even invited Mr. Zhang to meals to coerce him into signing the documents, which were admissions of guilt. They didn't allow Mr. Zhang and Ms. Wang to meet with their family. Mr. Zhang's clothes that were taken out of the detention centre were full of blood.

On July 28th, 2006, the Huantai County Court secretly announced several verdicts at the Huantai County Detention Centre. Mr. Zhang Aiquan was sentenced to an eight-year prison term and was taken to Jinan Prison. Ms. Wang Mingyun was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison and taken to the Shandong Women's Prison.

Due to long-time persecution, Ms. Wang showed symptoms of serious high blood pressure and was taken to the Shandong Police Hospital. Police officers ordered Ms. Wang's family to pay the medical fees, otherwise they would not be allowed to visit her.

Mr. Zhang and his wife are still imprisoned and being abused.

Note

1. Dead person's bed - All four of the practitioner's limbs are stretched out and tied to the four corners of a cold metal bed frame. The victim cannot move. He is not allowed to get up to eat, drink, or use the bathroom. This treatment usually lasts from several hours to more than a ten days. As one can imagine, this type of cruel torture causes severe damage to the practitioner's mind and body. See the illustration of this form of torture at http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2004/12/15/55600.html.
