While in the prison she became extremely weak and depressed. Her eyesight started to deteriorate, and a medical examination by a prison doctor found that she was unable to see normally. The prison guards nonetheless still forced her to do slave labour.

Ms. Hu has been arrested a few times, as well as fined and sentenced to forced labour since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999.

Ms. Hu went to Beijing on July 3rd, 2000, to appeal against the persecution of Falun Gong, and was detained at Qianmen Police Station. She was later transferred to the Shisanchu Detention Centre on the outskirts of Beijing. After being tortured at the detention centre for ten days, officers from the Duchang County National

Security Division handcuffed her and escorted her back to Duchang. She was held in the Duchang County Detention Centre for 36 days and was released only after the police extorted 2,000 yuan1 from her.

Chinese Communist Party (CCP) agents have often gone to her home to harass and intimidate her family members as well as to extort money from them in the form of "fines." Ms. Hu has been arrested several times. Her husband could not bear the the prolonged harassment and intimidation, and as a result, he became mentally disordered at one stage and could not look after himself.

Ms. Hu was arrested once again in April 2005 and sentenced to a year of forced labour. She was detained in Majialong Forced Labour Camp in Jiujiang City.

In 2007, her husband died due to the mental pressure and illnesses. Their adopted daughter was studying at a high school in Nanchang City at the time. After Ms. Hu was imprisoned, her daughter was living alone and her living expenses were not covered. It was said that the daughter went to Guangdong Province to work after her graduation from high school. Her whereabouts is still unknown.
