Yinchuan City: Wife Sentenced to Four Years in Prison, Husband Serving Eight Year Sentence for Practising Falun Gong

Ms. Shan Jining from Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, was recently sentenced to four years in prison. Her husband, Mr. Wang Desheng, was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2005.

On October 17th, 2009, Ms. Shan was reported to the authorities while she was distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong at the Guangming Square in Yinchuan City. She was arrested by officers from the Jiefangxi Street Police Station. After being held at the Yinchuan City Detention Centre for several months, she was secretly sentenced to four years in prison. She is currently detained at Yinchuan City Women's Prison.

While Ms. Shan was being held at the detention centre, her mother and other family members went to the relevant government agencies several times to request her release, but they did not get any answers. The Xingqing District Police Department issued the detention notification and the Xingqing District Procuratorate issued the arrest order.

Ms. Shan began to practise Falun Gong in 1996. After the start of the persecution on July 20th, 1999, she went to Beijing twice to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. In 2005, the officers from the Yongning County Police Department arrested her, and she was sentenced to three years of forced labour. Upon the expiration of her term at the Ningxia Women's Forced Labour Camp, the labour camp officials extended her detention. Shortly after she was released, she was sent to a brainwashing centre.

Ms. Shan's husband, Mr. Wang, was an employee of the Zhongning Power Plant in Ningxia Province. He began to practise Falun Gong in 1993 and was a volunteer assistant for Ningxia Province. Shortly after the persecution began, he went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. However, he was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison. He was detained at the Guanmahu Prison in Wuzhong City, Ningxia Province.

On January 6th, 2005, the Yinchuan City police arrested him again, and he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
