Ms. Lu Shuqin, an elderly woman from Shijiazhuang City in Hebei Province, had two daughters, Ms. Feng Xiaomei, her oldest, and Ms. Feng Xiaomin. Both they and their husbands were Falun Gong practitioners. Ms. Feng Xiaomin's husband, Mr. Wang Hongbin, was tortured to death in 2003. Less than a year later, in 2004, Ms. Feng Xiaomin was also tortured to death. Ms. Lu's husband could not handle the overwhelming sadness of losing two children in a row. After being harassed numerous times by the police, he passed away in early 2005. Ms. Feng Xiaomei has become very ill from being tortured in a forced labour camp, yet is still being forced to work.

Before the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to repress Falun Gong in July 1999, both Ms. Feng Xiaomei and her husband were engineers at the equipment factory of Hebei Province Post and Telecommunication Office. She and her husband, Mr. Wang, both graduated from Changchun Post and Telecommunication College. Ms. Feng was very sharp and proficient at work. She took her job seriously and was very responsible. She was already the chief engineer in her factory when she was only in her early 30s. Her husband was a quiet, scholarly man. He never took an active interest in worldly affairs but would quietly help others in need. Their son, Wang Boru, is a very sweet child. Her family, friends, and co-workers all knew that Falun Gong brought happiness to this family.

The following is Ms. Lu's personal statement:

My name is Lu Shuqin, I am 67 years old, and live on Huaibei Road in Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. I am Feng Xiaomei's mother. On April 27th, 2009, officers from the Shijiazhuang City Police Department, Shijiazhuang City sub-bureau Police Department, Gaocheng City Police Department, Liangcun Development Zone sub-bureau Police Department, and Development Zone Police Station arrested my daughter because she practises Falun Gong. She was later sentenced to a forced labour camp for one and half years.

She is now in the forced labour camp. Her health is deteriorating rapidly and blood has been observed in her stool for the past several months. The physician's primary diagnosis is nodules in the large intestine, with the possibility of cancer. Despite her condition, I was told that the labour camp still makrd her do hard labour because the camp has to meet a high quota. After a day's work, my daughter is so exhausted that she lays in bed in great pain, barely able to move. Being her mother, I am very worried about my daughter, and I beg the relevant department to consider my family's difficult situation and allow my daughter to be bailed out on medical leave.

I worked very hard to raise my two daughters. They were very good children and received a good education. They were well-mannered and hard-working. My eldest daughter, Feng Xiaomei, was a senior engineer at her work place. After she started practising Falun Gong, she was kind to people and got along well with her co-workers. At work, she never complained and contributed tremendously to her employer, who evaluated her highly She cultivates Falun Gong, which is based on the universal principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Practitioners look inward when they have problems at home, and they are tolerant and consider others' needs above their own. Our whole family was very happy. My two grandchildren, both well-behaved, reflect our once harmonious home life. My two sons-in-law were very good to me. Even though I have endured hardships my entire life, I was confident that my relatives would care for me when I grew old.

I never thought that Jiang Zemin, the former chair of the CCP, would use his power to persecute Falun Gong. Since the start of the persecution in 1999, our family has been in a terrible situation. My eldest daughter's husband, Wang Hongbin, was tortured to death on October 9th, 2003, in Shijiazhuang Forced Labour Camp for practising Falun Gong. My youngest daughter died as a result of torture in May 2004 because she would not give up Falun Gong. Her husband, Wang Xiaofeng, is also a victim of the persecution. Because he practices Falun Gong, he has been forced into homelessness and his whereabouts has been unknown for many years. We don't even know whether he is dead or alive.

Right now, my eldest daughter is in a forced labour camp because she would not give up practising Falun Gong. She has been denied release. I have been left to support my two grandsons, one of whom is 19 years old and the other only seven. My daughter's salary used to cover all our family expenses. I have no money to pay for my grandchild's tuition, and we are having difficulty keeping ourselves fed. I really don't know how we will survive.

I am almost 70 years old and have had to endure the pain of seeing two of my children pass away before me. I really do not understand how they could have been abused to death--and all because they practised Falun Gong. People who practise Falun Gong are healthy. They save the government money on medical expenses, are calm when they encounter problems, and are nice to people. My daughters improved tremendously both physically and mentally after practising Falun Gong. What was bad about that? Why won't the government let us practice? Why the beatings and killings? How can they treat their citizens like this? Right now, my eldest daughter, Feng Xiaomei, is suffering in a forced labour camp.

I heard that last year, 80 per cent of the prisoners in Hebei Women's Forced Labour Camp were Falun Gong practitioners. It makes no sense: a forced labour camp is for robbers, drug addicts, prostitutes, and people who have committed crimes! How come the police departments don't go after the bad people in society, but go after good people who practise Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance? What kind of world is this?! If my youngest daughter, Feng Xiaomei, dies, I will not be able to endure it. I don't know if I will be able to carry on anymore. But I can't give up because of my grandchildren. Who would take care of them?

Officials at every level, no matter who you are, I think you must have families and you want your families to be happy. Please imagine yourselves in our situation: there are still families like us, suffering tremendous hardship and prosecution. I beg the relevant officials to consider my family's difficult circumstances. Save my family; save my daughter, Feng Xiaomei; and release her for medical care. Let my family live.

Lu Shuqin, Feng Xiaomei's mother
