At about 3 p.m. on June 24th, 2009, Yan Baozhen from Zhuhai City was reported to the police by a cleaner and a security guard while she was distributing Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution. At 6 p.m., the police searched her home, took all Falun Gong books and DVDs, and arrested her. The policemen also threatened her son, who had just arrived home at the time, and stated that Ms. Yan would be sentenced to three years in prison.

Ms. Yan was detained at the Zhuhai No.2 Detention Centre. Her husband and son asked the Xiangzhou District authorities to release her. The local head of Zhuhai's national security office, Lai Haizhong, said that he did not file charges in Yan's arrest. Lai Haizhong has searched homes and arrested Falun Gong practitioners since 1999.

Li Dan, the head of the brainwashing centre of the Xiangzhou District 610 Office then took charge of this case. She pretended to be nice to Ms. Yan's husband, but said that she could not release Ms. Yan because the amount of Falun Gong materials found at the time of her arrest was too high and over the acceptable level. (The referenced "level" doesn't have any legal basis.) Ms. Yan's husband requested to see his wife, but the policemen did not allow him to see her.

Ms. Yan's husband wanted to sue the Zhuhai City police, since their behaviour was illegal. He was allowed to see his wife in August, 2009. The deputy head of the detention centre met him and told him that all involved would suffer if he sued.

Upon seeing his wife, Ms. Yan's husband noted that she had lost a lot of weight, but still had some energy. He requested the policemen to release her on the basis of her declining health. However, the policemen said that she was super healthy, as she was able to explain the facts about Falun Gong while not disclosing information about other practitioners, do the Falun Gong exercises every morning and fold paper lotus flowers every day.

Ms. Yan's husband requested to visit his wife twice a month. On October 18th, 2009, her husband, son and daughter went to the detention centre to visit her, but she was not there. They asked where she was being held, but nobody knew. After much time and effort, they found out that she had been sent to the Sanshui Forced Labour Camp on September 17th, 2009. Ms. Yan was sent to one year and three months of forced labour without any legal procedures.

When Ms. Yan's husband and children arrived at the Sanshui Forced Labour Camp on October 18th, they could not even recognise her. After one month there, her face had become dark, her mind was not clear and her blood pressure was at 180mmHg. She weighed only 120kg, down from 150kg. Ms. Yan's family demanded her immediate release from the forced labour camp for medical treatment, but the guards refused. Only immediate family members were allowed to see Ms. Yan, while her daughter-in-law and son-in-law were not permitted to do so.

Yan Baozhen's main persecutor in the Sanshui Forced Labour Camp has been identified as a female in her 40s with the first name of Zhou.
