On May 4th, 2009, Falun Gong practitioner Mr. You Xianbang, from Nanhai District, Foshan City was sentenced to jail for three years with a fabricated charge. Around July 15th, 2009, the police secretly sent him to Sihui Prison without notifying his family. Mr. You Xianbang had previously been sentenced to one year of forced labour camp between 2001 and 2002.

Mr. You was born in Shaanxi Province, and is a resident of Nanhai District, Foshan City. He worked for the Environmental Protection Agency of Foshan City. He was fired as a result of the persecution and has been doing various kinds of mechanical maintenance and electrical and gas installation jobs since.

Arrested and Sentenced

On the evening of September 18th, 2008, Mr. You was distributing Falun Gong materials in Yunguo Village, Banshakeng, Luocun Street, Nanhai District. A villager named Huang reported him to a security officer named Guo. Afterwards, Guo worked together with a another security officer named Zhou to stop him and report him to the police. The local police arrested Mr. You Xianbang and jailed him at the Nanhai Detention Centre. Afterwards, the detention centre disallowed his family to visit him.

At 2:30 p.m. on February 17th, 2009, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials sentenced Mr. You Xianbang without directly notifying his family. His family was not aware of it until they went to the court and made inquiries. He appeared in the No. 4 Courtroom of the Nanhai District People's Court, and the public prosecutor of the Nanhai District People's Procuratorate assigned Hong Shaosheng as prosecutor, Ning Gangyi as assistant prosecutor, and Liang Ning (female) as the presiding judge.

During the trial, Liang Ning asked whether Mr. You gave out materials. He answered: "I am innocent and have nothing wrong by telling people about my belief, which is being unjustly persecuted." The question was repeated several times. Finally Liang Ning said: "Fine, I know what you mean, I can sentence you to three to seven years like this, and the charge is "destroying the legal execution." And then, she started to list several so-called witnesses, none of whom came to court to testify. There was no material evidence. The trial was finished within 30 minutes. From the beginning to the end, Liang Ning did all the talking. The so-called jurors and prosecutors did not have a chance to say anything.

On May 4th, 2009, the CCP-controlled Nanhai District Court sentenced Mr. You Xianbang to three years in prison, from September 18th, 2008 to September 17th, 2011.

Around July 15th, 2009, the police secretly sent Mr. You Xianbang to the Sihui Prison in Guangdong Province without notifying his family.

Sentenced to Forced Labour Camp and Brainwashing

Mr. You Xianbang was sentenced to forced labour camp in 2001. On January 16th, 2001, Foshan City Forced Labour and "Re-education" Management Committee (at No. 8 Dafo Road, Foshan City) sentenced Mr. You to one year of forced labour camp for distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong. His imprisonment was extended by almost two months before he was released on February 9th, 2002.

During his forced labour term, the police forced Mr. You Xianbang to stand under the severe heat of the midday sun in the summer, and forced him to march for long periods of time. They directed prisoners to surround him 24 hours a day, monitoring, and confining him to "small cells" and using all kinds of means to torture him. Sometimes, they used up to six electric batons to shock him at the same time, causing tremendous physical and psychological harm.

In 2002, after Mr. You was released from the forced labour camp, he was monitored and harassed by the police of the Foshan National Security Team, the Domestic Security Team of Nanhai Police Sub-station of Foshan City Public Security Bureau, Foshan Nanhai 610 Office1, Nanhai Political and Judicial Committee, the police of his residential area, and his neighborhood committee before he was jailed for three more months at Sanshui Brainwashing Center.

In the later half of 2003, the local police took Mr. You Xianbang to a brainwashing center, making further attempts to force him to renounce Falun Gong.

During these years, no matter where he went to look for a job, Mr. You was continuously harassed and persecuted by CCP agencies including the Foshan National Security Team, the Domestic Security Team of Nanhai Police Sub-station of Foshan City Public Security Bureau, Nanhai 610 Office, Nanhai Political and Judicial Committee, the police of his residential area, and his neighbourhood committee. As a result, he had to repeatedly change jobs. He eventually became unemployed. He has no secure income. He has two seniors and a young child to care for at home, yet only his wife has an income. His family's financial situation is very difficult. At the beginning of 2008, his father died of illness.
