Ms. Li Wenjuan's Family from Shanghai City Arrested

Ms. Li Wenjuan and Ms. Zhong Yijun are both in their 60s. On June 5th, 2009, when Ms. Li was visiting Ms. Zhong at her home, they were arrested by police from Shanghai's Putuo District and local 610 officials¹. The police also arrested Ms. Li's husband and her son-in-law. The simultaneous arrest of the three family members frightened Ms. Li's pregnant daughter to have a miscarriage.

After 24 hours of detention in the police station, Ms. Li's husband, who was in poor physical condition, was sent to the hospital. As a protest to the arrest, Ms. Li went on a hunger strike and became very weak physically. But the 610 officials of Putuo District refused to release her and put her under official arrest.

Ms. Li lives in No. 39 of the Zichang residence area, Putuo District, Shanghai City. She used to be the vice chairman of the labour union of the 101 factory of the Instruments and Metres Administration of Shanghai City. When she was young, she suffered from back pain and rheumatism for many years. In 1997, she found a Falun Gong book by chance. After reading it, she found it was exactly what she wanted all through her life. She conducted herself according to the Falun Gong principle "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance" at all times. She was serious about her work and would do her best to help others often. Not long after she practised Falun Gong, her diseases disappeared.

After the persecution began, because she refused to give up the practice, Ms. Li was sent to brainwashing facilities many times. Each time she was held in the brainwashing unit, she explained the facts about Falun Gong to its staff and regained her freedom nobly.

Ms. Zhong Yijun, from Changchun City, Jilin Province, is a retired worker of the Bei-er Company of Shanghai City. She is highly regarded among her neighbours and friends.

Now Ms. Li and Ms. Zhong are held in the detention centre of Putuo District, Shanghai City.
