On July 17th, 2009, 66-year-old Ms. Xu Hanming from Changning District, Shanghai was arrested at home by police from the Changning District 610 Office1 and the Changning Police Department. The police confiscated a large number of personal belongings from her.

Ms. Xu is a retired teacher from the Yan'an West Road No. 2 Elementary School in Shanghai. Because of her steadfast belief in Falun Gong, she has been arrested numerous times, detained in brainwashing facilities twice, and sentenced to a labour camp for a year.

The following is a summary of the persecution that Ms. Xu Hanming has suffered:

In April 2001, Ms. Xu was placed into a brainwashing centre for over three months.

On the morning of September 13th, 2005, six 610 Office agents and two Changning District police officers broke into Ms. Xu's home. They forcibly carried her out, with some people carrying her head and arms, and others carrying her legs. They began ransacking her home and took photos of the home. Ms. Xu was detained for over two months this time.

In 2006, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) conducted widespread arrests of Falun Gong practitioners due to an upcoming summit of six heads of state. On the morning of June 12th, 2006, Ms. Xu was followed by police when she left her home. When she returned home, she was arrested by the police and agents from the Changning District 610 Office. Two officers from the Changning Police Department and four plain clothes Domestic Security Division officers proceeded to pull Ms. Xu from the third floor all the way to the ground floor. They refused to let her use the toilet and did not even let her put on her shoes. The police ransacked her home immediately after, but didn't find the Falun Gong material they were looking for. At that time, Ms. Xu's 70-year-old husband went to the police department to visit her, but the police said that they didn't know where she was. Ms. Xu's husband was also being monitored. Every time he left home, someone stopped him and asked him where he was going. Nine days after her arrest on June 21st, 2006, Ms. Xu was sentenced to one year in a labour camp.

Since Ms. Xu Hanming began practising Falun Gong, she has been very focused and responsible at work. She has volunteered to help students from poor families many times. This kind, exemplary teacher has been detained and persecuted three times only because she would not give up her belief in Falun Gong.
