Ma Fan, a thirteen-year-old girl from Liaoning Province, has a simple wish: to be united with her mother. However, in July 2009, this wish was once again denied. On the afternoon of July 13th, 2009, Ma Fan's mother, Ms. Zhang Lirong, was arrested on the charge of "spreading propaganda about Falun Gong" by officers from the Tiexi Police Department's Gongren Village Police Station in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province.

Ma Fan has a kind and loving mother. However she has spent very little time with her. Because her mother believes in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance and strives to be a good person, she has been arrested three times and spent five years in a labour camp.

In 1996, when Ma Fan was born, her mother developed post-partum back pain. She was unable to straighten her back, and taking medication had no effect. After her grandmother began practising Falun Gong in 1995, her hunchbacked figure from bone tuberculosis surgery straightened, and the rheumatism she suffered from disappeared. Ms Zhang began practising Falun Gong and her illnesses disappeared, including her stomach problems and headaches. Ma Fan's parents lived according to Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and generously helped people in need. The young Ma Fan often heard adults praising Falun Gong. At that time, her family was full of joy.

In October 2000, when Ma Fan was four years old, she experienced the pain of being separated from her mother for the first time. Her mother went to Beijing to peacefully appeal for Falun Gong and little Ma Fan went along. Ms. Zhang wanted to share her personal experiences and tell the government that Falun Gong is good. At Tiananmen Square, a kind police officer secretly advised Ma Fan and her mother, "Appealing has no use. If you assault someone, commit mischief or robbery, the police may not care what you do. But the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) does not let you believe in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. If you believe in these principles, they they will persecute you. The CCP is unreasonable."

Ms. Zhang was taken to the Longshan Forced Labour Camp in Shenyang City and detained for two years. When she returned home, she was skinny, her complexion was sallow and she had lost a lot of hair. Ma Fan learned from listening to the adults, that in order to force her mother to renounce her belief, the guards tortured her mother in many ways. She was deprived of sleep for an entire week, savagely beaten, grabbed by the hair and thrown head-first against the wall, her mouth was forced open with steel spoons for forced-feeding, and she was taken to a male labour camp (Zhangshi Labour Camp).

After learning about what happened to her mother, Ma Fan was afraid of her mother leaving her again. In March 2005, her mother was arrested again and taken to Masanjia Forced Labour Camp. Ms. Zhang has held steadfast in her practice. While visiting the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp, Ma Fan saw that many practitioners' mothers were detained there.

The worries that Ma Fan expressed became a reality ayet gain. Her mother was arrested for the third time. She hopes that her mother will return safely and that her wish to be reunited with her mother will soon be fulfilled.

Ms. Zhang Lirong's recent arrest:

At 9:00 a.m. on July 13th, 2009, Ma Fan's grandmother, practitioner Ms. Tian Xiurong, was deceived and arrested by Li Jingliang, an officer from the Tiexi Police Department's Gongren Village Police Station. At the time, Li was sitting idly at the Mingqu shore on Weigong Road. He told Ms. Tian, who was sitting beside him, that he had many illnesses. Ms. Tian told him about the benefits of Falun Gong and gave him a CD exposing the persecution of Falun Gong in the hopes that he would benefit from it. Instead, Li grabbed Ms. Tian's bag and called for backup at the same time. They took Ms. Tian to the Gongrenchun Police Station. Ms. Tian resisted any interrogation and refused to provide personal data. She only talked about the truth of Falun Gong. At around 4:00 p.m. that day, the police found Ms. Tian's photo, name and address on the Internet. When officers from the Gongren Village Police Station went to ransack the home, they arrested Ms. Zhang Lirong. The police called for backup from the Tiexi Police Department. Nine officers went to the home and confiscated a printer and Falun Gong books and materials. Currently, Ms. Tian Xiurong has been released. The guards used the excuse that Ms. Zhang Lirong was "operating a shop for spreading news about Falun Gong," to detain her at the Shenyang City Detention Centre
