Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Sun Kaiching and others, detained at Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp in Harbin, have been on a hunger strike for over a week in order to protest the inhuman treatment they receive in the camp. Mr. Sun is around 55 years old. He worked in the Education Department of Harbin Normal University, and has previously been arrested and tortured while imprisoned.

Although December 20th, 2008 was a date on which family and friends were allowed to visit the prisoners at Changlinzi, when Mr. Sun's family went to the prison, they were not permitted to see him.

This is the fourth time that Mr. Sun has been imprisoned and abused at Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp.
In October 2000, he went to Beijing to tell people the facts about Falun Gong and was arrested by Beijing police officers. Because he did not cooperate with the guards during the two years he spent in the prison, they scalded a large area of his body with hot water. After he returned to his hometown of Harbin, he was detained for two months at the Nangang District Police Station.

In November 2001, when Mr. Sun was distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong in the residential area of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of the China Earthquake Bureau (EMICEB), he was arrested by community security guards. The police abuse Falun Gong practitioners in various ways including pushing them, breaking their limbs, subjecting them to freezing cold temperatures, placing them in a solitary cell, and other cruel methods.

On September 19th, 2004, while Mr. Sun was distributing Falun Gong leaflets at Qingbin Park, Xuefu Road, Nangang District, he was arrested by officers from the Qingbin Police Station. He was detained at Nangang Police Station. Police interrogated and tortured him in various ways and tried to force him to write the three statements1. Mr. Sun was determined to study the teachings of Falun Gong and totally negate the efforts of the police, and so he did not cooperate. The police again sent Mr. Sun to Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp, where he was again physically abused.

On April 18th, 2008, when Mr. Sun was on the street talking to people about Falun Gong, he was arrested by Chinese Communist Party members. He was detained at Nangang District Police Station. At the end of April, he was sent to Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp for one year.

Note

1. "Three Statements": Practitioners are coerced under brainwashing and torture to write "Repentance Statement," "Guarantee Statement" or 'Dissociation Statement" as proof that they have given up their belief. In the statement, the practitioner is forced to admit remorse for practising Falun Gong, promise to give up Falun Gong, and never again associate with other practitioners or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.
