Around 2 p.m. on May 5, 2003, a group of police broke into Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhang Yuzhen's home in Room 305 of the Dongdayingbi Building in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. The police confiscated the family's property, some Falun Gong books and audio tapes, and they took Ms. Zhang to the Lanyuan Police Station in the Xuanwu District. In the evening, they detained her in the Nanjing Detention Centre.

After two to three days, Ms. Zhang's son, Mr. Cao Gancheng, who is not a Falun Gong practitioner, went to the police station and asked to see his mother. After being refused, he became distraught and anxious. He couldn't understand how his mother could be arrested simply because she practised Falun Gong. The whole family was under a lot of pressure. Six days after his mother's arrest, he told his younger sister, "I will bring mother home tomorrow." His sister asked if he had found someone to help. He said, "Don't ask." Unexpectedly, on the second day (May 12th) after his mother had been detained for one week, Mr. Cao Gancheng climbed to the roof of the seven story building and shouted, "Falun Gong is good." After that, he jumped off the building. The family rushed him to Nanjing Municipal Military General Hospital, but it was too late. He died at 43 years old, leaving behind a daughter in kindergarten.

In the afternoon of the day after the tragedy, Ms. Zhang Yuzhen was sent to the Lanyuan Police Station where police extorted 2,000 yuan1 from her two daughters to bail her out. After learning that her son had committed suicide to protest her persecution, Ms. Zhang was overcome with grief and indignation. Several years have now passed. Mr. Cao's father still mourns his son every day, and his granddaughter has lost her father's love.

Mr. Cao Gancheng loved calligraphy and painting his whole life. The students he taught have won awards many times in municipal, provincial and international calligraphy competitions. His death made his students and their parents feel sorrowful and grief stricken to lose such a good teacher. His friends and colleagues in calligraphy and painting were deeply grieved. They reminisced about their talented and honest friend. Mr. Gao's relatives and friends reprimanded the Chinese Communist Party's evil conduct.

(Note: Mr. Cao Gancheng's death caused many people to grieve. Practitioners in China, please make sure to tell your family members not to take such extreme actions to protest the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or rescue family members. Practitioners across the country and family members of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted should use wisdom and peaceful means to rescue arrested practitioners.)
