Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Tian Suhua, 43, lives in Wenlou Village, Xiangcheng City, Henan Province. She was arrested by Shanan District Domestic Security agents from Zhoukou City on July 3rd, 2008. She was detained in the Zhoukou City Detention Centre and later in the Xiangcheng City Detention Centre after the Chuanhui District Procuratorate in Zhoukou City issued a formal order for her arrest and detention on August 7th.

Ms. Tian is a single parent who surrendered custody of her only child to her brother and family due to financial difficulties. Due to her failed attempt at opening a hair salon, she took jobs as a cleaning lady and a singer in a dance hall.

She was detained in the Xiangcheng City Detention Centre in 2000 because someone reported to the authorities that she practised Falun Gong.

In the summer of 2001, Zhoukou City's 610 Office1 made Xiangcheng City an experimental site for persecuting Falun Gong practitioners, and forced detained Falun Gong practitioners to participate in so-called "military training." Wu Zhen was a college student and also the nephew of the detention centre head, Wu Yong. During summer vacation, he was recruited to take part in torturing Falun Gong practitioners. He once kicked Ms. Tian until she passed out. A doctor stuck about two dozen needles into Ms. Tian's body while attempting to resuscitate her. One of the needles was stuck deep into Ms. Tian's heels. Ms. Tian lost feeling in both feet, resulting in difficulty walking. Her eyesight was also affected and she suffered from blurred vision. She was sent to Shibalihe Women Labour Camp in Zhengzhou City where the torture continued because she remained steadfast in practising Falun Gong.

After Ms. Tian was released, her life was even more difficult. She no longer had a field to plant crops, and she was handicapped, requiring the use of a walker. She used the meagre amount of money given to her by her brother and friends to buy a hand-cranked three-wheeled cart and began her harsh life living in the streets.

She used the three-wheel cart to collect rubbish, beg for food, sell peanuts and steam buns. Her brother again gave her money which she used to buy a three-wheeled motorcar. When Ms. Tian rode the motorcar taxi, she held herself to the standard of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance".She made very little money because of her poor eyesight. She lived a difficult life with the little money she made picking up customers with her motorcar taxi.

She was arrested by Shanan District Domestic Security agents in Zhoukou City because she gave Traffic Police Division Leader Zhou Changqing Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution and Zhou reported Ms. Tian to the authorities.

At 11:00 a.m. on November 17th, Ms. Tian was taken to Nandun District Court in Xiancheng City. Two police had to hold Ms. Tian down to prevent her from escaping the police car. Her sister quickly approached her and grabbed her. The police let the two sisters sit together because Ms. Tian could hardly walk. Ms. Tian was not frightened; she defended herself convincingly when faced with the fabricated charges. She exposed the police brutality that caused her disability. She also demanded that she unconditionally be released

Ms. Tian's family sympathizes with her and worry about her health. Her brother was once detained in the Xiangcheng City Detention Centre for being implicated by her. During the adjournment he used his own personal experience to explain his sister's innocence.

Note

1. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
