Ms. Mao Yaping, born in 1962, was an employee of the Lanzhou City Motor Factory. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong after 1999 and was detained. In January 2001, she was arrested at work and forcibly taken to the Hanjiahe Drug Rehabilitation Centre located in Qilihe District, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province.

In November 2002, Ms. Mao was arrested again at work and forcibly taken to the notorious Gongjiawan Brainwashing Centre - the "Lanzhou City Legal Education School." On July 20th, 2003, guards at the centre began their cruel torture of detained practitioners. Ms. Mao was hung up by the handcuffs for more than ten days and confined for more than one month. Severe physical and mental abuse damaged her health badly, and she never recovered. She suffered kidney failure and died on October 2nd, 2007 in her hometown of Tianshui City, Gansu Province.

Ms. Mao is the third reported death as a result of being tortured in the Gongjiawan Brainwashing Centre. The first one was Yu Opera actress Ms. Liu Zhifang, 48, who died in July 2005 (see http://www.clearharmony.net/articles/200512/30528.html). The second one was engineer Mr. Qian Shiguang, 65, who died on September 8th, 2008 (see http://www.clearharmony.net/articles/200809/46178.html).
