On February 21st, 2008, Ms. Li Songfang, from Jiaoling County, Guangdong Province was arrested by the local police. After searching her home and harassing her family members, the police confiscated some Falun Gong materials and over 200 yuan1 in cash.

In March 2008, Ms. Li's father-in-law became seriously ill and very much wanted to see her. Since the police refused to release her, the elderly man passed away without seeing Ms. Li again. However, before he died, he asked his family to make sure that she was there for his funeral.

To honour his last request, family members went to the county police department and the 610 Office2, asking them to give Ms. Li two days leave so that she could attend the funeral services. But no matter how much the family pleaded, their requests were refused.

Ms. Li was plagued by many illnesses before beginning Falun Gong practice. However, after practising for less than a month - and without taking a single pill - all of her diseases disappeared. In addition, she has felt good both physically and mentally ever since.

Knowing that Falun Gong was a righteous way and seeing that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was suppressing it, Ms. Li explained the facts about Falun Gong to anyone who would listen.

In June 2008, the police secretly interrogated Ms. Li, and without going to trial, sentenced her to four years in the Guangzhou Women's Prison.

When her family received news of her imprisonment, they were devastated. Her husband was grief-stricken and found it very difficult to concentrate on his day-to-day life. Once he absent mindedly walked outside his home and stumbled to the ground, unable to get up. As a result, he had to lie in bed, flat on his back. He was unable to roll over, sit, or stand for three days.

His family members later took him to a hospital, where he stayed for more than ten days. The cost of his hospital stay was over 10,000 yuan, even though his improvement was minimal.

Note

1. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.

2. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
