Ms. Ding Guiying, in her fifties, lives in Honggang District, Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. She makes a living as a hairdresser and also rents out some apartments. Since she began practising Falun Gong in 1996, she followed the principles of Truth-Compassion-Forbearance and was known to be a noble person. She provided warm and thorough service to her customers. For those who rented her apartments, she provided them with quilts without any charge. Her husband passed away a long time ago. She raised her two daughters on a meagre income. From the perspective of her neighbours, Ms. Ding is kind hearted and has a strong will. Yet, with no regard for her upstanding character, the authorities sentenced her to forced labour recently.

Since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched the persecution of Falun Gong on July 20th, 1999, the influence of CCP propaganda was driving some of Ms. Ding's customers away. But some people who had a deep understanding of right and wrong told her, "If the police keep on harassing you, please let me know. I will go to argue with them."

Because she appealed for justice for Falun Gong, Ms. Ding was held in a detention centre and sentenced to forced labour before. But she was not accepted by the labour camp since she did not pass the medical check-up. Later, since she needed to take care of her granddaughter and grandson, she seldom lived at her home. She did not return home until June 2008, and prepared to be a hairdresser again to maintain her livelihood.

But in less than one month after returning to her job, on July 22nd, 2008, under the pretext of checking her tenants, police officers from Babaishang Police Station called Ms. Ding at home and deceived into going to the police office in Chuangye Community. They told her she would be at the police office for a short while and then be allowed to go home. But when Ms. Ding went to the police office, she was arrested and taken to Dulitun Detention Centre. While she was at the police station, the police officers, without any warrant, ransacked her home. On August 1st, 2008, the guards beat Ms. Ding. Without notifying her family, she was sentenced to one year of forced labour and taken to Harbin City Drug Rehabilitation Centre.

Ms. Ding's family had been expecting to pick her up after 15 days of detention, but they had not heard any news about her after 15 days. Many days passed and there was still no news of her. So her family went to the police office in Chuangye Community to inquire about her situation. The officers swore that they knew nothing. Her family then said that they would go to the Babaishang Police Station to inquire there the next day. The police realized that they could not conceal the truth. Early in the morning of the next day, the police sent the notification of forced labour to her family.

Ms. Ding practised Falun Gong to improve her health and followed the principle of Truth-Compassion-Forbearance to be a good person. Is that a crime? She was detained and sentenced to forced labour without reason. Where is justice? Those who are involved in the persecution of Ms. Ding and other practitioners, please awaken. Practitioners are concerned about you and your future, so please reconsider what you are doing.
