Additional Information on the Death of Ms. Hu Qinglan in Gansu Province

Ms. Hu Qinglan, in her 50s, was a retired employee from the Gansu Province Construction Second Machinery Factory. She went to Beijing to appeal on July 7th, 2000, and she was subsequently detained in a detention centre in Beijing for more than twenty days, where she had to eat mouldy food, was stripped of her clothes, and was forced to sit on hard stools for extended periods of time. She was detained another fifteen days after she returned home in the Yaoshuping Detention Centre. Guards forced her pull a heavy cart in 104 degree Fahrenheit weather. She was forced to drink muddy water and do late-night overtime heavy labour, such as unloading the coal truck. She became as thin as a skeleton. People were very worried when they saw Ms. Hu after she was released. The union chairman constantly had "talks" with her around any sensitive date. Under this huge physical and mental pressure, Ms. Hu died on April 29th, 2001.
