The Changchun Police Station has established a background check office in order to protect the Beijing Olympics. The office's activities include ID examination, review of relationships and backgrounds of coaches, athletes, volunteers, officers and individuals who plan to attend the Olympic games. One of their focal points is to identify Falun Gong practitioners and their relatives.

The background check office is composed of officers from the Safety Brigade and State Security Brigade. Safety Brigade officers are responsible for checking personal backgrounds. Meanwhile, State Security Brigade officers provide a list of practitioners and their social connections, and then monitor the people they've identified. If any of these people are Falun Gong practitioners or their relatives, they are disqualified from attending the Olympic games. Moreover, the person would then be labelled as a suspect, and even his or her relatives would be monitored or taken in for questioning. If these individuals had already purchased opening ceremony tickets, these tickets would be confiscated.
