On February 19th, 2008, Ms. Zhu Lanying from Baoding City, Hebei Province, and another two practitioners were reported when distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong. They are now detained in the Baoding City Detention Centre.

Ms. Zhu, 44 years old, is a villager in Shenzhuang Village, Hancun Township, Xinshi District, Baoding City. Before she practised Falun Gong, she suffered from sinusitis, a slipped disc, gynaecological problems, and asthma. After she practised, all of her illnesses disappeared, and she became very healthy.

In 2001, she went to Beijing to appeal to higher authorities. After she told the government officials how much she had benefited from practising Falun Gong, she was arrested by the police and beaten. Later on she was taken back to Baoding. She was beaten in the Hancun Township Police Station and was fined 10,000 yuan1, for which she was given a receipt. The receipt is attached below. Her family could not pay the money, so it was deducted from all kinds of bonuses distributed to villagers every year. The situation is ongoing.

Later on Ms. Zhu was detained in the Baoding City Detention Centre. Her legs, hips, and back turned blue from cyanosis, a condition caused by lack of oxygen in the blood. At that time, her youngest son was just in the second grade in primary school, and her daughter was a teenager. Her elderly mother was grief-stricken by the persecution of her daughter and worried about her so much that she passed away in May 2001. Her family members had to pay a fine of several thousand yuan so that Ms. Zhu's children could see their mother one last time. Police officers brought her out of the detention centre. After the family had seen their mother for only a few minutes, she was taken back into the detention centre.

Zhu Lanying's second eldest brother, Zhu Jinxiang, suffered from many diseases before he practised Falun Gong, and he took medicine every day. After he became a practitioner, he had a sound body and mind, and all of his illnesses were gone. After 1999, he was also detained and had money extorted from him by policemen in Hancun Township. He died an untimely death in December 2005.

Ms. Zhu was held in the detention centre for several months. Then she was sentenced to prison for three years. She was persecuted in the Taihang Prison in Mancheng County, Hebei Province. She was released in 2004.

In order to live, with the help of friends and relatives, Zhu Lanying and her husband took out loans and opened plants for flour and glass sand. She worked hard for two or three years, getting up early and staying up late, and the profits from the plants grew. But the police frequently went to her home to harass her for practising Falun Gong.

At the end of 2007, villagers in Shenzhuang Village, Hancun Township, obtained 35,000 yuan for selling land. But the money for Zhu Lanying and her brother, 70,000 yuan in total, was deducted. Other money distributed to the villagers was all deducted from them.

On February 19th, 2008, Ms. Zhu and practitioners Wang Huan and Kong Lanzhi went to Xiantai Township, Mancheng County to distribute leaflets exposing the persecution of Falun Gong, but were reported by people who did not know the truth. They were arrested by officers with the Xiantai Township Police Station. On the afternoon of February 22nd, she was taken to Baoding Detention Centre.

Zhu Lanying's family members went to Hancun Township to ask for her release, but did not succeed. They had 2,000 yuan extorted from them again by police officer, Dong Xin. In the past few years, the police in Hancun Township have taken several hundred thousand yuan in total from Falun Gong practitioners in Shenzhuang Village. The amount of money extorted from individual practitioners ranges from several thousand yuan to more than 10,000 yuan.
