I am an elderly Falun Gong practitioner in my 70s . When I distributed leaflets exposing the persecution in Beijing in October 2000, patrol officers arrested me. I was sentenced to one and a half years of forced labour and held in the Dongcheng District No.1 Detention Centre, where I developed high blood pressure, as high as 220. I also developed arrhythmia and high blood sugar of 13.8, and I was close to death. The police took me to the Dongcheng Police Hospital, now called Dongcheng Police Health Care Centre. I did not get treatment there, but was tortured instead.

It was winter and very cold at the time. I wore only thin clothes and could not stand the cold in the basement. I had to wrap a quilt around me. The guards immediately snatched the quilt away, saying that I might be trying to do the exercises. They brutally handcuffed me to a bed, with my hands and feet fixed to the four corners of the bed. Two weeks later, I was taken to my hometown and further abused.

At that time the Dongcheng District Police Hospital held at least 100 practitioners, who were handcuffed and shackled and monitored 24 hours per day. The guards often savagely force-fed them. They also forbade the practitioners from communicating with each other, and violators were shocked with electric batons.

Practitioners who had been tortured to near death could not get proper treatment in the police hospital. Those in charge continued to torture them physically and mentally. Even when the practitioners were tortured to their last gasp, the officials handled things carelessly. After a practitioner died as a result of torture, those in charge claimed to the family that they had taken many rescue measures, which was simply not true.
