In August 2007, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials in the local government in Shendian Township, Qushui Town, Jialing District, Nanchong City of Sichuan Province started a new round of persecution of Falun Gong practitioners because of the 17th Party Congress. They broadcast it to the entire town and encouraged the villagers to report Falun Gong practitioners. Local government officials declared that whoever reported a practitioner would get a 200 yuan1 reward; whoever turned in a Falun Gong poster would get a 100 yuan reward; and whoever found out about a Falun Gong gathering would get a reward of up to 1,000 yuan.

On August 9th, practitioners Ren Guirong and Han Xianji exposed the persecution of Falun Gong and explained the importance of quitting the CCP to Tang Shenghua, who lived in the 14th Village. Tang Shenghua, however, lured by the temptation of rewards, reported the couple to authorities. As a result, Tang received the 200 yuan reward.

The next morning, together with Hu Chunhe from the Qushui Town Security Office, Zhang Jian and one police officer from the Qushui Police Station went to the residence of practitioners Ren Guirong and Han Xianji and told the couple to go to the police station with them. Ren and Han refused to follow them. Therefore, the officers called their "upper-level authorities" and collected some more officers (among whom were the township's CCP Party head Gou Ping and some others from the National Security Team at the Jialing District Police Department). They forcibly searched Ren and Han's residence and then arrested Ren and Han, detaining them in the town government building. After interrogating the couple until late into the evening, the officers transferred Ren and Han to the local Nanchong City Police Department in the Jialing District for 15 days.

When Ren and Han were just about to leave the detention centre gate following their release, they were blocked by a police car belonging to officials from the Qushui Town Police Station. Immediately, six or seven people rushed from the police vehicle and forcibly pushed Ren and Han into the vehicle. After that, Ren and Han were detained in the brainwashing centre in Nanchong City and are still there.

On hearing this, Ren and Han's eldest son, who works out of town, returned. He found his parents' village head to ask for their release. However, the head said, "The upper-level authorities said to release Falun Gong practitioners only after the 17th Party Congress." Then their son went to the township government to request their release. Someone at the township government said, "Putting your parents in the brainwashing centre costs us a large amount of money every month. We don't want to do it either." Then their son went to the brainwashing centre, but the officers there told the son to go talk to his parents and persuade them to write a guarantee statement to give up practising Falun Gong. In addition, the centre ordered the son to make Ren and Han slander Dafa. They also tried to make the son write the statement for Ren and Han. Respecting his parents' rights, the son refused to cooperate with the officers.

One day, their eldest son came across Tang, whose report to the police led to his parents' arrest. He asked why Tang was so heartless as to report his parents. Tang did not regret what he had done and also lied to the township government, saying that the son beat him up. Yet, someone at the government knew the truth about Falun Gong and sternly criticised Tang, hence he was unable to get another reward.

Since the persecution started in 1999, Ren Guirong and Han Xianji have suffered from numerous ruthless persecution incidents. On July 5th, 2000, they went to Tiananmen Square in Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa. They were arrested and police brought them back in handcuffs.

The officers gathered the people in the entire township for a meeting where they publicly insulted Ren and Han. After that, they held Ren and Han in the Jialing District Detention Centre for two weeks. While there, Ren and Han were verbally abused and savagely beaten. Because Ren refused to write a statement to give up practising Falun Gong, the prison guards urged some criminals to force Ren to "stand like an oval" for two hours (his body was bent over at a 180-degree angle; his hands had to touch his toes, with his legs and hands stretched straight).

At the same time, Shendian Township government staff and officers from the Qushui Town Police Station sent a large gang to search Ren and Han's residence. They randomly broke things and took away the couple's ID cards and a tape recorder. After beating the couple's second son, they detained him. Then they beat the daughter-in-law, forcing her to borrow money to bail him out. She had no choice but to borrow 2,000 yuan overnight, and then went to pay the money at the police station. No receipt was issued. After paying another 450 yuan to the Township Armed Forces Office head Wen Anfu, she finally had her husband released.

Right before the 2002 Chinese New Year, Shendian Township government officials and those from the Qushui Police Station incarcerated Ren Guirong and Han Xianji in the Jialing District Detention Centre for two months. The guards there repeatedly read them materials that slandered Falun Gong.

One day, after their release, some officers from the township government went to Ren and Han's residence to beat Han cruelly. They lied to the couple's 6-year-old grandson and asked him to tell them, "Where have grandpa and grandma hidden their Falun Gong books? We'll give you money if you tell us." Hearing this, the grandson took them to where the books were. After they got the books, they gave the grandson 10 yuan.

On August 10th, 2007, agents from the Qushui Police Station and certain personnel from Shendian Township government searched another practitioner couple's residence. The two practitioners were able to leave safely. For five days in a row, the local authorities sent dozens of people to Ren and Han's residence to harass the family, to ambush them in the evenings. On the fifth day, they even searched in the mountains attempting to capture them, but failed.

The people in the local area are furious with the agents from the CCP persecuting kind-hearted Falun Gong practitioners, and they voiced their disapproval of the persecution.
