Pengzhou City Police Department in Sichuan Province used the made up accusation of "disturbing social order" to detain Falun Gong practitioners Li Yunjiu and Shi Qunyang at the Pengzhou City Detention Centre. We have recently heard that Li Yunjiu had been sentenced by secret trial to five years of imprisonment, and Shi Qunyang was sentenced to three years of imprisonment.

Li Yunjiu and Shi Qunyang were arrested on November 22nd, 2006 at 8.30 p.m. when they were putting up posters about Falun Gong in Lichun Town, Pengzhou City. They were being followed and were eventually arrested by Lichun Town police officers. Policemen Wang Hu and Li Mou assisted police chief Ceng Jun during the arrest. While in detention, Li Yunjiu and Shi Qunyang suffered abuse. They were put in handcuffs and shackles and their personal freedom was curtailed. Though they had been detained for seven months, their family members were unable to visit them.

Li Yunjiu's husband Mr. Yang had went on many occasions to the Lichun Town police station, to the Pengzhou City Police Department and the city procuratorate to enquire of her condition and to seek her release, but to no avail. He became emotionally and physically exhausted. Ms. Li's son (Deyang Reformatory Police) wanted to rescue his mother, but was afraid of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) despotic power. He was afraid of becoming implicated and thus dared not ask too much. On top of this, a forty-year-old woman, claiming she could help them get Ms. Li released, said she was from Chengdu City Police Department and cheated them out of 2,400 yuan1. Shi Qunyang's husband was also tricked into paying eight hundred yuan.

At his wits end, Mr. Yang could only pin his hopes on seeing his wife at the trial. On July 1st, 2007 he received a letter from his wife that read, "We can finally meet in court." He was excited. But when he read the letter more carefully he realised the letter was written on June 22nd, and the date of the trial was June 29th. It was obvious that the police, for the sake of achieving their objective of persecuting Li Yunjiu and hiding their evil agenda, had intentionally withheld the letter. Thus outside parties and Ms. Li's family members did not get to attend the trial. Through other sources, they found out that Li Yunjiu had been secretly sentenced to five years of imprisonment, and Shi Qunyang was secretly sentenced to three years in jail.

Shi Qunyang's husband Mr. Yang's employer was the city tax collection bureau. His niece was also working in the bureau as a section chief and was implicated simply for being related to Ms. Shi. She was removed from her post by bureau chief Lin Gang. Lin Gang went personally to Ms. Shi's residence after she was sentenced to prison and threatened Mr. Yang, saying, "If you don't divorce your wife, you will not get your pay."

Pengzhou City Politics and Law committee and 610 Office2 agents instigate Falun Gong practitioners' employers to persecute them. How can they do this to practitioners who follow "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance and their innocent family members ?"

Note

1. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.

2. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
