Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Lian Tao from Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province, has been subjected to severe long-term persecution at Suihua Forced Labour Camp.

Wumahe District Police arrested 62-year-old Mr. Lian on September 23rd, 2005, from his home. His home was searched and his possessions confiscated. His computer was taken away. After being held at the Wumahe Detention Centre for about a month, Mr. Lian was sentenced to three years of forced labour. He was transferred to Suihua Forced Labour Camp in Heilongjiang Province on October 26th, 2005.

After the 2006 Chinese New Year, Mr. Lian requested to see the camp head due to the guard on duty arbitrarily beating people and demanding overtime work, such as selecting toothpicks, for up to 14 hours at a time. Policeman Liu Wei and six other guards beat Mr. Lian so brutally that he could no longer see clearly and he was covered in black and blue bruises. Two days later a guard who beat Mr. Lian was promoted from team leader to division leader.

On January 31st, 2006, when Mr. Lian asked for some water, he was beaten by criminal inmate Wang Jianmin.

In the middle of February 2006, the guards and all the inmates from No. 1 Team beat Mr. Lain for about ten minutes. No. 2 Division Leader Zheng also participated in the beating. Mr. Lian's face was bruised.

On June 9th, the newly appointed team leader, Lian Xing, ordered Mr. Lian Tao to come to his office. Lian beat Mr. Lian Tao brutally with an electric baton, severely injuring Mr. Lian Tao's left arm and breaking his little finger. He also sustained muscle and facial injuries from the beatings. It was said that an inmate reported him talking about the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party 1

For about six months in 2006, the team leaders and guards from No. 2 Division, which was designated for persecuting Falun Gong practitioners, forced practitioners to sing Party songs. Those practitioners who refused to sing were often beaten. More than ten practitioners were beaten, hung up, or shocked with electric batons.

One of the most severe incidents of abuse that Mr. Lian Tao and several others endured happened the night of September 20th, 2006. The No. 1 Team Leader from the No. 2 Division, Lian Xing, together with guard Shi Jian, and political heads Long Kuibin and Jin, beat Mr. Lian for not singing. The sounds of the beating and Mr. Lian Tao's shouts of "Falun Dafa is good" were clearly heard throughout the prison. Those that looked out saw Lian Xing chasing and beating Mr. Lian Tao with an electric baton. Several practitioners shouted, "Don't hit people!" Policeman Lian Xing opened the hallway's metal gate, and, together with other inmates, beat practitioners in all the cells. The next morning during personal wash time, others saw Mr. Lian's severely bruised body.

At about 5:00 p.m. on January 10th, 2007, Lian Xing took practitioners Li Shaotie and Zhang Xing to the guard office and beat them brutally. All the practitioners in the No. 1 Team of the No. 2 Division tried to stop them and shouted "Falun Dafa is good!" The guards beat them. Mr. Lian was jailed in a small cell and forced to sit on a metal chair for seven days. He could not walk when he was released from the cell.

Once Mr. Lian Tao drank some water when the guard was not around and an inmate beat him severely. He was also beaten by the inmate for talking in the cell and was reported to the guard. The guard and team leader Chen Xinlong took Mr. Lian to the office, where they brutally beat him and shocked him with an electric baton. Mr. Lian had injuries all over his face and body. The authorities increased his term by three more months, yet the inmate who beat him was not punished.

Suihua Forced Labour Camp officials forbade Mr. Lian Tao's family from visiting him, saying that his case was very serious and visiting was not allowed. His family members have not seen him since he was put in the labour camp.
