Mr. Gai Wufan Persecuted by the 610 Office after Hiring Lawyers to Defend Wang Bo's Family

Around 5 p.m. on June 21st, 2007, under orders from Li Jun, Deputy Bureau Chief of the Yuhua Public Security Bureau, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, policemen from the Yudong Police Station arrived at the home of Gai Wufan, who is Wang Bo's uncle, displayed a search warrant issued by the Yuhua Public Security Bureau, and accused 87-year-old Gai Wufan of distributing Falun Gong flyers. They claimed that someone had reported him to the authorities.

The police failed to find any evidence after ransacking the entire house, but they dragged Wang Bo's uncle to the Yudong Police Station for interrogation. Using the excuse that someone had reported him to the authorities, they tried to extract other information from him during the interrogation, asking, "Who had hired a lawyer for Wang Bo? Why were there so many Falun Gong practitioners present during her trial? Who is contacting her on a regular basis?" Mr. Gai replied to them, "Is it against the law to hire a lawyer?" Showing their lack of logic, the police said that they were asked to do the questioning by their superiors and hoped that he would cooperate so they could carry out their task. Gai Wufan could not withstand the trauma of police threats and their breaking into his house, and he became severely ill. Due to his family's strong appeals, Gai Wufan was returned home that night.

On the morning on June 22nd, Wang Bo's aunt was also taken away by the police for interrogation. The police asked, "How much did you spend to hire the lawyer?" She replied, "Are you going to pay our expenses? Wang Bo's entire family was imprisoned by you guys, and you still have the nerve to harass my family. Is it illegal to hire a lawyer? What are you guys really up to?!" Due to her protests, the interrogation ended abruptly and she was sent home.

That same morning, Gai Wufan was once again taken to the Yuhua Public Security Bureau for another round of interrogation, similar to the first round, and he was released at noon.

On July 4th, policemen Zhang Xinzheng from the Yudong Police Station deceived Mr. Gai into going to the police station to "have a little talk." As soon as Mr. Gai entered the police station, his personal freedom was taken away. The staff threatened him that their superiors had ordered them to sentence him to "re-education" through forced labour simply because he had hired a lawyer for Wang Bo's family. Mr. Gai reasoned sharply with them and the officers were dumbfounded. He was later released after failing the medical check-up and being refused entry by the forced labour camp. On July 5th, the police came to get him again and took him to another well-known major hospital for a second check-up. The result was the same: he had cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure that failed the labour camp's entry medical test. According to sources, the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) 610 Office1 still did not give up and tried to apply pressure on the Police Station and Administration to persecute Gai Wufan and his wife.

During the "Second Trial" of Wang Bo's family, Mr. Gai suffered immense pressure as Wang Bo's uncle. He hired six lawyers from Beijing to defend Ms. Wang as not guilty. The lawyer's righteous defence rendered the authorities powerless and created great reverberations both nationally and overseas. However, the CCP still decided to "go against the world" and ordered Shijiazhuang City's Middle People's Courts to secretly "maintain the original sentence," sentencing Wang Bo's entire family to imprisonment. Ms. Wang Xinzhong had already been diagnosed with 180/120 high blood pressure in February 2007 and had atherosclerosis, which meant that she fulfilled the requirements to be bailed out for medical treatment. Yet, Ms. Wang Xinzhong was still sent to Jidong Prison, Tangshan, Hebei Province. Moreover, her family members were prohibited from obtaining any information related to her health.

On June 16th, Luo Gan travelled to Shijiazhuang to personally supervise the situation. Throughout this period, Gai Wufan was harassed and arrested several times. This is believed to be directly tied to Luo's orders. At the same time, before Mr. Gai was arrested, all the practitioners who attended Wang Bo's "second trial" were harassed at home by police and the community Party Committee members. Among which, Hua Fengxiang, who lives at the Xinhua Agency, was arrested, and sent into the Hebei Provincial Parliament Brainwashing Centre along with three other practitioners who were arrested--Lü Shufen, Wei Tianchen, and Yang Yul. Hua Fengxiang, Wei Tianchen and Lü Shufen began a hunger strike on June 25th to protest the persecution. According to sources, Hua Fengxiang had returned home on July 3rd. Wei Tianchen and Lü Shufen had refused water and food for more than a dozen days. They are in critical condition and have developed cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and kidney failure, yet the authorities still refuse to release them. Instead, they are forcibly injected with liquids. Yang Yulu has been interrogated every day in an attempt to force Yang Yulu to "transform2."

This time, the Yudong Police Station had also wanted to sentence Gai Wufan's wife, Liu Ruiqin (Wang Bo's aunt), to forced labour. However, because Liu Ruiqin has an 87-year-old mother to take care of at home, they allowed Ms. Liu to serve her term "outside of prison." It is truly despicable that the CCP is able to sentence a person simply because he or she helped his or her relatives hire lawyers to defend themselves in court.

In reality, the CCP's courts had long posted notices for Wang Bo's second "public trial." Those concerned about Wang Bo's family naturally knew about it and went to get passes to attend. The CCP was displaying its hooligan nature by arresting potential court spectators before the trial began. The promise of an open trial was a pretence to facilitate the arrest of "dissidents." Now, even more than two months after the trial, they still continue to arrest innocent people.
