Ms. Zhang Ping, 76, was a retired employee of the Donggang District Hospital in Rizhao City, Shandong Province. Ms. Zhang suddenly went missing on June 1st, 2007. Her family members and friends tried various ways to enquire of her whereabouts. They eventually discovered that agents from the Rizhao City 610 Office1 had arrested and locked her up at a detention centre.

This is the eighth arrest for Ms. Zhang. Why does the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) "610 Office" fear an elderly woman? It is a long story.

1. Poor Health

Ms. Zhang Ping was a good doctor in Rizhao City. However, she developed over twenty illnesses, such as, tracheitis, high blood pressure, neck vertebra and lumbar hyperplasia, peripheral inflammation of the shoulder joint, cerebral arteriosclerosis, stomach and intestines problems, neurotic headaches, insomnia, forgetfulness, heart disease and other ailments. She felt cold every day. At bedtime she needed to put a feather pillow on her abdomen and a thick cushion under her lower back to keep warm. She still felt pain and often sat up more than half the night. Because of headaches, she had to wear two caps in the winter. When it became cold she coughed and was barely able to breathe. In addition, her face was pale and her legs were swollen with oedema. Most of her hair had turned white. As a result, she took early retirement. She was hospitalised with a relapse of heart disease in 1997, and was hooked up to many machines.

Ms. Zhang endured her illnesses and took care of her family when she could. But the long-term illnesses made her fretful, and she often got angry.

2. Fortunately Beginning Falun Gong Cultivation

In early 1999, Ms. Zhang received a Falun Gong book. After reading this book she finally understood the true meaning of life. After she started practising Falun Gong, all of her illnesses disappeared within a short time. As a result, for the past eight years her workplace no longer had to pay money for medical expenses. She felt the true happiness of being illness-free. At the same time she followed the principles of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance" at all times, improved her character and became tolerant and optimistic. Furthermore, she thought of others first in doing all things and became even more considerate of others.

3. Enduring Hardships

In July 1999, former CCP leader Jiang Zemin began the persecution of Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang Ping went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.

From then on, several people constantly harassed and monitored Ms. Zhang. They include the former Donggang District Hospital head Hou Yuanqing, policemen from the Rizhao City 610 Office, Xu Yanpin (his wife was Ms. Zhang's colleague), Wang Yubao, Meng Qingfeng, Qin Yujing, and former head of Wanghai Road Police Station and Qin Sihai. They arrested her six times and took her several times to the notorious Wangcun Forced Labour Camp in Zibo City. At the camp they tried to force her to "reform1" and abused her cruelly. Each time she was tortured to become emaciated and traumatised.

Even though she was abused and mistreated like this, the 610 Office agents still went to her house to harass her, also deeply traumatising her family members.

Through study of the Falun Dafa teachings and doing the exercises Ms. Zhang recovered quickly. She experienced the miracle of Dafa again and held to her belief even more resolutely. Because she did not give up her belief, in 2001, 610 Office agents ordered the former Donggang District Hospital head Hou Yuanqing to cancel her retirement pension. However, the 610 Office persecutors used her retirement pension for their food and drink expenses when dealing with her case. Ms. Zhang went to meet her former supervisor several times, but was unable to make contact with him. The new hospital head, Li Qiang, continued to treat her inhumanely. Since they stopped her retirement pension, she was no longer considered an employee of the Donggang District Hospital. Nevertheless, the evildoers from the hospital -- including office director Li -- still cooperated with 610 Office agents to harass her. They ransacked her home several times. Once they even confiscated a piece of jade from her granddaughter.

4. More than Ten "610 Office" Agents Arrest Ms. Zhang Ping for Exposing the Persecution

While facing the cruel persecution, Ms. Zhang still persisted in informing people about the true nature of Falun Gong. On November 4th, 2006, Donggang District Police Department deputy head Jin Xinguo in Rizhao City, "610 Office" agent Qin Yujing and Zhaoyang Road Police Station personnel dispatched four police cars loaded with more than ten policemen to arrest Ms. Zhang Ping again. They pushed her granddaughter who was holding on to her tightly, and took Ms. Zhang into the police car. Ms. Zhang's daughters condemned their evildoings. The persecutors later arrested Ms. Zhang's two daughters.

5. A Mute Person Can Speak

Following her arrest she still compassionately explained the facts about Falun Dafa to the policemen who were persecuting her.

Compassion was powerful! When she was detained, the inmates in the detention centre all called her "elder Falun Gong lady." When tasty food was served they would serve her first, and they competed to help Ms. Zhang wash her feet and hair. When Zhang Ping was mentioned, some inmates immediately shouted, "Falun Dafa is good. Zhen-Shan-Ren is good!" After she entered the ward, she wrote the words of "Falun Dafa is good. Zhen-Shan-Ren is good" on the hands of a mute person, and let her memorise it because she could read. Twenty days later, two days before Ms. Zhang Ping's release, the mute person stood before her and spoke the words, "Father! Mother!" All of the inmates were astonished and joyful.

When she had left prison, the first thing she did was to send 200 yuan3 and some clothes for the inmates with the most difficult financial situation. She had scrimped and saved to accumulate the 200 yuan. She knew how cold the detention centre was, so she bought cotton shoes and gloves for every person in the cell. It was said when the inmates received the cotton shoes and gloves Ms. Zhang had bought for them, all of them in the cell shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!"

6. Arrested for the Eighth Time

This elderly woman upset the evildoers who tried to harass and persecute her. In March 2007, during the two CCP meetings, Rizhao City Political and Judiciary Committee officials, those from the Rizhao City "610 Office," from the Rizhao Board of Health and from the Donggang District Hospital harassed Ms. Zhang Ping many times. When they could not find Ms. Zhang, they threatened her son-in-law that they would cancel his independent business license. They also threatened her daughters, saying if they could not find Ms. Zhang they would lose their jobs and would be arrested as hostages. Ms. Zhang's daughter and son-in-law were forced to move away from Ms. Zhang's residence last year and no longer live with their mother. Furthermore, their jobs kept them busy, and they did not meet their mother very often. Despite this, the evildoers often relentlessly harassed the families, traumatising them.

On June 1st, 2007, officials from the Rizhao City Political and Judiciary Committee and from the 610 Office secretly arrested Ms. Zhang Ping. She has so far been held at the Rizhao City Detention Centre.
