Commentary on the Lies from China's Ministry of Health Regarding the Organ Harvesting From Living Falun Gong Practitioners

During a January 11th, 2007 interview with the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), China's Ministry of Health spokesman Mao Qunan did not provide evidence to rebut charges that the Chinese Communist regime harvests organs from living Falun Gong practitioners, nor did he explain why China refuses to let an independent group of foreign investigators enter the country. Instead, he slandered Falun Gong and accused practitioners of spreading rumours.

Who Is Telling Lies?

The same Mao Qunan has lied to the world before while under the spotlight. When answering a journalist’s questions on April 10th, 2006, he denied that the Chinese government unscrupulously takes organs from executed prisoners and uses them for transplants as stated in foreign reports. He claimed that most of the transplanted organs in China come from voluntary donations when Chinese citizens pass away.

But nine months later, Mao Qunan told the BBC during a special interview that it is difficult to motivate Chinese people to donate their organs because of traditional beliefs. He publicly admitted most transplant organs come from executed prisoners.

His contradictory answers cast shadow over how true his word really is. We must not forget, however, that Mao Qunan is only a mouthpiece for the Communist regime. The regime is a liar and has always vociferously denied its practice of harvesting organs from executed prisoners; so why would it come forward with an "honest" answer this time?

It seems the Party’s goal is to confuse the public and divert attention from its harvesting of organs from living Falun Gong practitioners and cremation of their bodies, "a form of evil new to this planet," (as stated in the "Report into Allegations of Organ Harvesting of Falun Gong Practitioners in China") by owning up to a less gruesome crime.

The regime took a series of actions to cover up the truth after its harvesting of organs from living Falun Gong practitioners surfaced in March 2006. When witnesses exposed the existence of the Sujiatun Concentration Camp, where illicit organ harvests had taken place, the Party remained silent for three weeks and then invited US Embassy officials to tour the place only after it had cleaned up and destroyed all the evidence. Next, the Party removed and modified numerous websites with organ transplant advertisements that target foreign patients. A new law went into effect on July 1st, 2006, that the sale of organs and requires donors to indicate their willingness in writing. Despite the law, it is known that there is a large gap between enacting legislation and implementing such legislation in China, and the law itself does not say anything about the source of organs.

At the same time, Chinese media started reporting on organ transplants performed for financially deprived people and stories about organ donation, in an attempt to create the illusion that most transplant organs in China come from voluntary donations. In the meantime, more and more evidence has emerged showing that Falun Gong practitioners are indeed victims of live organ harvesting.

The Honourable David Kilgour, former Canadian Secretary of State for the Asia Pacific region, and human rights lawyer David Matas co-authored an investigative report after conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence. They concluded in the report that the regime has been taking organs from living Falun Gong practitioners. The report has drawn world-wide attention.

An independent investigation group consisting of well known persons in different parts of the globe was formed. The group requested permission from the Chinese Communist regime to conduct on-site investigations in Chinese labour camps, prisons and concentration camps. The regime refused to issue visas for members of the group while claiming many organs come from a source it had previously been vigorously denying; executed prisoners. The regime went as far as to accuse the victims, Falun Gong practitioners, of slander.

One thing the Party failed to explain is the abundant supply of organs in China. The lack of donor organs serves as a bottleneck that limits organ transplant surgeries in all other countries, yet strangely it is the most "advanced" aspect of transplant surgeries in China. The current transplant rate in China could never be achieved even with organs from all officially recognised executed prisoners.

According to a January 1st, 2007 report in the Jinling Evening News, a local paper in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, a patient entered Gulou Hospital in Nanjing City on December 18th, 2006, and was able to receive both a liver and kidney on December 30th. This highly emotionally charged article says the patient spent thousands of yuan on a daily basis due to her illness, although her family is not wealthy. The hospital director was confident that he could find matching organs for her. After less than two weeks, a matching liver and kidney were found. The director’s confidence shows he is accustomed to quick organ procurement. In other countries, the organ availability wait time is calculated in years, while in China it is calculated in days. The usual wait time in China is two weeks or one month at most, as was stated on websites of many Chinese transplant centres, which were later removed. Falun Gong practitioners in China also collected lots of leads for investigation that reveal short wait times and sufficient organ supply at many hospitals.

Behind the abundant organ source is a huge live organ bank, as an unknown number of Falun Gong practitioners have been brutally slaughtered to make money for the Party.

The Party is making a futile effort by admitting its use of prisoners’ organs. The regime thoroughly defamed Falun Gong during its all-out propaganda war launched on July 20th, 1999, and treated Falun Gong practitioners as enemies of the state. As the majority of Chinese people shunned Falun Gong practitioners after buying into the state-manufactured lies, the regime was free to do with the practitioners as it wished, without public outrage. It was therefore much more convenient to use Falun Gong practitioners as an organ source than prisoners, and it also served Jiang Zemin’s purpose of destroying Falun Gong. It is a crime with minimum risk that allows maximum profiteering, and that is why large-scale organ seizure from living Falun Gong practitioners, an unimaginable evil without comparison, has taken place.

Mao Qunan also said during the interview that the international community would have long been aware of the massive organ harvesting if the practice had indeed existed. Only now did the standards of the free world occur to him. The Communist regime, however, is not such a transparent, free country. It’s difficult for outsiders to know the amount of crimes that go on behind the "closed doors" of the Communist regime.

In short, the persecution against Falun Gong is an irrefutable reality, so why should we assume the Communist Party would stop at anything in achieving its goal, since it has always regarded universal principles of human rights and freedom with disdain?

A list of Communist officials’ contradictory claims regarding organ harvesting

Between November 7th and November 9th, 2005, Huang Jiefu, Deputy Health Minister of China admitted for the first time at a WHO meeting held in Manila that at present, most organs China uses for transplant come from death-row convicts.

In March 2006, Qin Gang, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "It is a complete fabrication, a lie, a slander to say that China forcibly takes organs from people given the death penalty for the purpose of organ transplant."

On April 10th, 2006, Mao Qunan, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, when answering a reporter’s questions, denied saying that the Chinese government unscrupulously takes organs from executed prisoners and uses them for transplants as stated in foreign reports. He claimed most of the transplant organs in China come from voluntary donations when Chinese citizens pass away.

On October 10th, 2006, Qin Gang, when responding to the report from BBC journalist Fu Dongfei (in the report, a doctor being interviewed said, "organs came from executed prisoners."), said, "some overseas media, when reporting on organ transplants in China, make up "fake news," "attacking China’s legal system."

In November of 2006, Huang Jiefu, Deputy Health Minister of China, again claimed at a conference in Guangzhou City that the majority of transplant organs were from death-row convicts. The Communist regime’s official media reported his claim.

On January 11th, 2007, Mao Qunan, spokesman for the Ministry of Health said during a special interview with BBC that most transplant organs in China come from executed prisoners.
