Ms. Liu Yumei, 49 years old, is a Falun Dafa practitioner who resides in Fushun City, Liaoning Province. She was previously a manager at Fushun Petroleum Collective No. 3, but has not been employed there since September 2001. Because she steadfastly practises Falun Dafa, she and her family have been harassed by local police and suffered inhuman persecution for several years.

Entire Family Suffers Persecution -- Younger Sister Liu Yuqing Died Resulting from the Persecution

Since the beginning of the persecution in 1999, Ms. Liu Yumei's family has not had one peaceful moment, as the local police and government employees break into their home almost daily.

Ms. Liu's younger sister, practitioner Liu Yuqing died from the persecution on April 13th, 2002. Liu Yuqing was employed by the Fushun Special Steel Factory. She was born on December 5th, 1962, and was a resident of Fushun City, Liaoning Province.

Liu Yuqing went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on October 23rd, 1999, and was arrested on October 25th on Tiananmen Square. The police took her to a detention centre. Some time later, she was taken by officers from the Wanghua District Police Centre to the Fushun City Rehabilitation Centre for detention. Six weeks later, she was transferred to her work unit for detention. She was not allowed to go home and was monitored by staff from the security section until February 2000. She lost all personal freedom.

On December 31st, 2000, Liu Yuqing went again to Tiananmen Square and unfolded a banner that read, "Falun Dafa Is Good." She was arrested and suffered brutal beatings and the tiger bench torture. She went on a hunger strike to protest her imprisonment and was unconditionally released seven days later.

At 10:00 a.m. on February 15th, 2001, three officers from the Putun Police Station in Wanghua District forcibly dragged her from the third to the ground floor at her workplace and took her to the police station. The next day, she was taken to Fushun City Detention Centre, and two weeks later she was transferred to Fushun City Wujiabao Forced Labour Camp.

From then on she suffered different kinds of torture, including brutal beatings, interrogation and sleep deprivation. Her internal organs were severely damaged from the beatings. Within a little more than one month, she became extremely weak. She had a fever and blood in her urine, looked sick and emaciated, and had lost over 20 kilogrammes (44 lbs.). When her family found out about her health condition they went to the labour camp and asked for her release. On April 11th, 2001, she returned home.

After 8:00 p.m. on February 9th, 2002, police chief Yu Shoujun and over a dozen people from the Wanghua Police Department, the Guchengzi and Yanwu Police Stations, and the local residential committee broke into her home by climbing over the wall, and confiscated her personal property. Liu Yuqing suffered another round of persecution. At only 40 years old, she passed away on April 13th, 2002. As she died, Liu Yuqing's eyes were open and her mouth half open, with an expression of sadness because of the injustice she suffered.

Ms. Liu Yumei's niece was sentenced to two years of forced labour, her eldest sister to one and a half years of forced labour, and her second eldest sister to one year of forced labour. Her husband is monitored by his workplace and the police continue to harass him. They do not even leave Ms. Liu's child alone. The police tracked him to his school where they harass him. The police do not even spare her 84-year-old parents. They have threatened them many times, and entered into their room by climbing over the wall. They stole property from her parents in August 2000 and February 2001. The two elderly people can no longer sleep out of fear. They are now suffering heart problems and chronic fatigue. When they hear movement or see a stranger they shiver, and are prone to incontinence.

The Persecution of Liu Yumei

Ms. Liu Yumei began to practise Falun Gong in 1998. Before practising Falun Gong, she suffered from serious illnesses, such as gastric hemorrhage, rheumatism, heart disease and so on. She had to take medicine daily and spent over 20,000 yuan1 for medical expenses. The cost for the medical expenses was deducted from her monthly wage. She is still in debt because of these expenses. Her husband's workplace has had financial problems since 1992. He did not get paid and is now unemployed. Their child needed money to attend school. After Ms. Liu began to practise Falun Gong, she became healthy in body and spirit. The miracle of becoming healthy was the turning point for her younger sister, mother and niece - they also joined the practice. From July 20th, 1999, when the persecution began, she continuously spoke of the benefits she derived from practising Falun Dafa to staff in governmental offices. Instead of listening to her, they persecuted her and made her suffer inhuman torment. She has been arrested seven times, detained in detention centres five times, taken to Fushun Forced Labour Camp for forced brainwashing twice, detained at Fushun No. 1 Training School (women's self-improvement school) once, and taken to Fushun Luotaishanzhuang Brainwashing Centre (Liaoning Province Legal System School) once. On February 21, 2002, she became disabled from the persecution. She could no longer take care of herself.

Appealing for Falun Dafa -- Repeatedly Arrested

After the persecution of Falun Dafa began, Ms. Liu appealed for Dafa, and was repeatedly arrested.

On July 23-25, 1999, over ten police officers from Wanghua District Police Station and staff from the District government surrounded Ms. Liu's home (practitioners were at her home). Over ten people took turns monitoring her home every day, did not allow her to go out, and confiscated a large number of Dafa books, banners and tapes.

After 11:00 p.m. on November 23rd, Ms. Liu was sleeping when local police officers ransacked the place and arrested 34 Falun Dafa practitioners. Two people were cuffed with one pair of handcuffs, and taken to a small meeting room at an unknown place. They were taken to three small rooms with armed police monitoring them. There were practitioners from outside of China there. The police wanted to separate them and expel those from outside of China. Everyone was gathered in a room when Ms. Tang from Australia said, "Put the Falun Dafa books into my red travelling bag, because I am a foreigner. I'll leave the country after 36 hours and take the books out of this place." Ms. Liu put all Dafa books and tapes into Ms. Tang's bag, who kept the bag with her at all times.

Everyone was there except Ms. Liu. One policeman told a policewoman to watch Ms. Tang and the red bag closely at all times, and not let her join the others. When the officers relaxed their watch for a minute, Ms. Liu took the red bag and rushed towards other practitioners. After she handed over the red bag, practitioners held her body, while police dragged her by her legs. She was pulled from both sides. Finally, she was pulled towards the practitioners.

Not long afterwards, the police separated them and put them into detention centres. They put handcuffs and foot shackles on Ms. Liu. Police officers and three criminal prisoners pushed her down, held her head, stepped on her four limbs, sat on her body, pried her teeth open with a toothbrush, poured salt water from plastic bottles into her mouth, pinched her nose and almost suffocated her. The salt water dripped down from her face and her body. She was then locked up in an isolation cell, with only a small hole for delivering food.

The minute Ms. Liu entered the cell, the cell head requested that she turn over the Falun Dafa book, Zhuan Falun. She said she did not have it with her. The prisoner said, "If I had learned Falun Gong, I would not have killed people." Many prisoners practised Dafa. The prisoners counted off and greeted the guards loudly, but Ms. Liu refused.

Three days later, Ms. Liu was transferred to Haizhu Detention Centre. The guards told her to recite the prison rules and shout when reporting. She refused to shout, recite prison rules, be photographed or be fingerprinted. They secretly recorded her. After this, her work colleague Xiao Chen and officer Zang from the Wanghua Police Station came to pick her up. Zang asked who was with her and how she came there. Ms. Liu refused to answer, so Zang punched her.

She was detained at Haizhu Detention Centre for 22 days, and then taken to Fushun City Detention Centre. Guards there told her to recite the prison rules, do manual labour, and not to sit with her legs crossed. She refused and protested. The prison head did not bother her any more. After three days of detention, from December 17th, 1999, she was under house arrest at her workplace. She was not allowed to go home during the Chinese New Year. She was deprived of her freedom.

During that time, the Residents' Committee, staff from the district government and public security sub-bureau, police officers from the police station, and her workplace officials surrounded her and tried to persuade her to give up practising Falun Gong. She told them, "My cultivation experience tells me that Falun Dafa is good. Your persuasion won't work. Don't even bother. Even if the entire world stops practising, there will still be one practitioner left, and that is me." Since then, they no longer came to talk to her. She was under house arrest until March 4th, 2000, a total of 78 days.

After July 21st, 1999, Ms. Liu took a cassette player outdoors at 2:30 a.m. and practised the exercises daily. She often met people doing their morning exercises and grazing sheep. She gave them fliers and told the truth. They told her to be careful.

Ms. Liu was working on a building site. She was demoted from a branch level employee to an administrative position, and had to work as a labourer. After 11:00 a.m. on September 22nd, 2000, Ms. Zhang and chief Liu from the security section came to see her. "The district secretary wants to talk to you. You have to go there." She knew it was a lie but she had already been pulled forcibly into the car. Local police officers were also in the car. Another car followed behind. She was taken to the district government and did not get a reprieve. The district government secretary Wang (female) got in the car and instructed the driver to drive to Fushun Forced Labour Camp. Thus, Ms. Liu was taken to the brainwashing centre and held there for 22 days.

Arrested for Unfurling Banner at Tiananmen -- Tortured Until Emaciated

At 3:30 p.m. on December 31st, 2000, Ms. Liu Yumei went to Tiananmen Square to unfurl banners. She saw plainclothes police and practitioners everywhere. Some practitioners unfurled banners, some shouted "Falun Dafa is great," some were bleeding from torture, and the police stepped on someone's head. Some time after 4:00 p.m., she saw a huge banner, 99 metres long, with "Falun Dafa is Good" written on it, hanging outside the People's Great Hall. Police officers, plainclothes men and security guards ran towards it.

To insure that the large banner would hang there a little while longer, Ms. Liu unfurled a 1.5-metre-long banner with "Falun Dafa is Good" written on it. Between seven and eight policemen ran towards her and seized the banner. She ran and shouted "Falun Dafa is good," took fliers from the sleeves of her cotton-padded clothes, and threw them into the sky. Five police officers ran towards her, and tripped, punched, kicked, pulled and dragged her. Ms. Liu was beaten to the ground and could not move, but she still kept shouting "Falun Dafa is good." They ruthlessly hit her face. She shouted again, and they beat her again. They tried to drag her towards the car. She refused to budge one inch. Therefore, they grabbed her by her arms and legs, lifted her head, and carried her to a van. The whole scene was recorded by a foreigner, though the film was confiscated by police.

Ms. Liu was taken to Beijing Qianmen Police Station. There were already over 400 practitioners in the courtyard. They collectively recited Hong Yin and "Lunyu." After 10:00 p.m., practitioners were taken away separately. She was detained at Xuanwu District Detention Centre. She did not tell her name or address and refused to cooperate. The police wanted to take a photo and fingerprint her, but she again refused to cooperate. Two guards ordered three male criminal prisoners to help them. Five people grabbed her hair, hit her face and head continuously, and pulled out about one third of her hair. There was a big bump on the back of her head from the beating.

She was locked in a cell, where she practised the exercises. The head of the cell ordered her to stop, but she insisted, so the head gave up. She was transferred to another cell after four days and went on a hunger strike. Practitioner Yu Peiling, a university student, was in the cell with her. Ms. Liu shared with her, saying, "We are Falun Dafa practitioners, not criminals. We can't comply. We should go on a hunger strike to protest the detention." Yu Peiling joined the hunger strike the following day, and refused to comply with the prison rules. Ms. Liu and Yu Peiling practised the exercises together. When they were doing the third set of exercises, about five of the prisoners in the cell held Ms. Liu down and cruelly beat her. She did not let this stop her. She got up after they stopped the beating and continued with the exercises. The police cuffed her hands, so she sat down to meditate with legs crossed. The prisoners still tried to stop her, but she insisted on sitting cross-legged so they left her alone.

On the second day of being denied use of the toilet, she protested with a hunger strike. After three days, the guards transferred her to a strict supervision cell. They did not allow her to cross her legs or jieyin. Ms. Liu told them the true facts about Falun Gong, but they did not wish to listen. The head of the cell, a drug dealer, exerted all his strength to move her legs. Another prisoner, a murderer, hit her with a leather belt, kicked her chest and pulled her hair. She ignored all of them and remained in the jieyin position or doing sitting meditation. The prisoners also gave up. Ms. Liu sat in meditation for five to six hours daily.

After one week on hunger strike, the guards and the prison doctor force-fed her. They force-fed her every two weeks. The guards told her to squat down with her arms on her head, but Ms. Liu did not cooperate. She just stood there. The guards pushed her to the ground but she still refused to follow their directives.

During the force-feeding, the guards pinned her down on a bed and tied her entire body, arms and legs with ropes, so she could not move. The doctor slapped her face with a big baton with Teacher Li's name on it. On the way back, she shouted, "Falun Dafa is good!" in the corridor. Female guard Li Wei (in her twenties) and about seven criminal inmates held her to the ground in the corridor, covered her head, sat on her, and beat her, and Li Wei kicked her chest with high heeled shoes. Ms. Liu became dizzy and suffered chest pain.

This time, Ms. Liu was tortured for 33 days. Her hands were cuffed for 27 days. She became emaciated and was at death's door. After dark on February 2nd, 2001, guards pushed her and two other practitioners into a car, took them a short distance, and then threw the two other practitioners out of the car. They took Ms. Liu to the Beijing west passenger station, and then took off. After the guards had left, Ms. Liu called her family. Her younger sister and brother-in-law came to take her back to Fushun.

Arrested Again, Cuffed to a Bed - Lumbar Vertebra Fractured

At noon on March 3rd, 2001, when Ms. Liu Yumei was having dinner at a relative's home, three people including staff from the Wanghua District Sub-bureau, and the District Politics and Judiciary Committee, and Wang (female) from the 610 Office1 rushed in unannounced, arrested Ms. Liu and took her to the Fushun City Forced Labour Camp Brainwashing Centre. They tortured her inhumanly with methods including slapping the back of her head, pinching under the armpit, "flying the airplane," facing the wall standing up, sleep deprivation, watching videos that defamed Dafa, and mental and physical torture. She suffered like this for a total of 67 days.

Between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. on February 9th, 2002, her manager Yu Shoujun, police officer Zhao and more than ten policemen from Yanwu Police Station of Wanghua Sub-bureau ransacked Ms. Liu's home. They opened the iron door with a master key, kicked open the second door, grabbed Ms. Liu's hair, smashed her into the wall, and hit her face. Yet, she explain the facts about Falun Dafa to the policemen. They refused to listen, and instead they pinched her neck, covered her mouth and forbade her from talking. They feared that the neighbours would hear her. They twisted her arms behind her back, cuffed her hands, and then took her to the police station where they tied her to an iron chair and interrogated her. They asked her, "Did you give Yu the material?" She did not answer. After 19 hours of interrogation, they completed a detention notice and asked her to sign, but she refused. They forged her name to the document and took her to Fushun City Detention Centre. During the night, police searched her two residences. They stole a bank book, 1,400 yuan in cash, a multipurpose recording machine, an incense burner, Falun Dafa books and a handbag, etc. They confiscated another 150 yuan, a telephone card, an ID card and other belongings that she carried with her. After she was locked up in the detention centre, she practised the exercises. The cell head tried to stop her, but she refused to comply. The cell head reported her to the guards. They came to look, pretended not to see and walked away. At night, she did the sitting meditation. One guard watched her for three hours, and told the cell head, "You should practise too."

On the sixth day of detention, she went on a hunger strike to protest her persecution. Three days later, leaders Zhang and Yang brought five guards and two prisoners to carry her to a car. They took her to the General Clinic in Shuncheng District, Fushun City for force-feeding. They held her arms, legs and head, and doctors and nurses pried her teeth open with pliers. They forcibly inserted a tube into her stomach through her nose and force-fed her, which caused her to suffer excruciating stomach pain.

On the afternoon of the next day, February 21st, they again force-fed her. She climbed out of the window from a bathroom on Level 1 of the hospital and tried to escape the persecution. Alas, she was injured, and suffered a head wound. Her entire body appeared to be paralysed. She had a CT scan and X-ray, which showed that her left pelvis, lumbar vertebra bone and left arm were fractured. Although she suffered excruciating pain, assistant leader Yang from the detention centre cuffed her. The physician-in-charge told Ms. Liu Yumei's husband, "She has fractures in many places and is in serious condition. She needs an operation immediately. It will cost a great deal. If nothing is done, there will be serious consequences." The police had stolen all her savings and her husband could not afford to have her treated. She left the hospital. She became disabled and could no longer take care of herself.

Arrested in October 2002, Subjected to Two Months of Torture

To expose the persecution, file a lawsuit against the head of Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Jiang Zemin, and reveal the depraved conduct by the police, Honourable people and fellow practitioners Li Weiji, Cai Shaojie and Wang Jie decided to make a videotape and collect evidence of Ms. Liu Yumei and her family's suffering. Therefore, on the afternoon of October 8th, 2002, she went to Tieling. At 10:00 p.m., when she had just arrived at a residence and was sleeping, more than ten policemen from the Hongqi Police Station, Yinzhou District Sub-bureau broke into and ransacked the place. They took her and Dalian practitioner Qu Jun (also disabled from the persecution with a left thigh fracture and a lumbar bone broken into pieces), Zhou Yanbo, and Zhou Yuzhi from Fushun (whose elder sister Zhou Yuling died from persecution) to the police station, and then transferred them to Tieling Detention Centre the next day.

Ms. Liu refused to answer questions and refused to eat. The large partitioned women's cell held over fifty people, with the majority being Falun Dafa practitioners. There were three cell rooms with practitioners in each cell. Ms. Liu and Zhou Yuzhi were held in cell No. 5 and Zhou Yanbo and Qu Jun were in cell No. 6. Three days later, they were force-fed. Prison doctor Qian Dapeng, male, 35 years old, ordered three male prisoners to help. They stepped on her legs, arms and hands and force-fed her barbarically. Because she did not cooperate, the tube came out of her throat. They repeatedly inserted the tube forcefully, breaking her nose and injuring her throat. After the tube reached her stomach, they pushed in the food with a wide needle. They inserted the tube and force-fed her three times a day. The next day, police put torture instruments on her, and on Zhou Yuzhi and Wei Yanhua. They put an iron ring on Ms. Liu's neck and locked it to the ground with a three-inch iron lock. Her head was tied to the iron loop on the ground, and she could not move. Head Tao and Sun, and leaders Zhang and Sun from the detention centre inhumanly tortured them. They ordered a blacksmith to make over twenty iron loops, which they fixed to the ground in the three cells. They cuffed her hands with thick and heavy iron chains and handcuffs. With one pair of handcuffs on each hand, she lay on the ground, four limbs stretched out straight, and with hand cuffs and foot shackles fixed to the iron loops on the ground. She was fixed to the ground, unable to move, and required others to help her with any personal needs. She went on a hunger strike for 62 days, even during the 58 days when she was fixed to the ground.

Police officers found and arrested Li Weiji, Cai Shaojie and Wang Jie, who collected and filmed Falun Dafa practitioners' persecution experiences, on the night of October 8th. Police officers of Yinzhou Sub-bureau interrogated Li Weiji many times. Li Weiji's face became misshapen and one side of his body was injured. He could no longer lift his leg, and could barely move his legs because of the foot shackles. He was sentenced to eight years.

Police officer Wang Hao interrogated Cai Shaojie. He used electric batons and the hanging up torture. Mr. Cai could no longer raise his arms, lost all feeling in his left hand and was sentenced to four years.

Mr. Wang Jie became critically ill from the persecution and was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. He was sentenced to seven years. The detention centre fabricated a story. They forced Mr. Wang to carry pork with vermicelli pickled cabbage, and filmed him putting a big piece of pork into his mouth.

Tieling Falun Dafa practitioner Lu Jianhua went to the USA in 1992. She began to practise there in 1996. After the persecution began in 1999, she quit a good position and returned to China to speak out for justice. She was arrested in Tibet and taken back to her local police station. The police stole the 30,000 yuan that she carried with her. Wang Hao of Yinzhou Sub-bureau tortured her cruelly. He hung her up by her hands for over a week and beat her with a high voltage electric baton. She lost all feeling in her right hand. She was interrogated over twenty times. She was in good health condition before the torture but was injured after the beatings and could not move for several days. Over ten Falun Dafa practitioners were sentenced, and sent to Dabei Prison in Shenyang. When Li, Cai and Wang were arrested, the police from the Yinzhou Sub-bureau stole one million yuan.

In the beginning, Qian Dapeng and two criminal prisoners performed the force-feeding three times daily. They force-fed a small bowl of thin cold powdered milk and diluted corn paste. Sometimes they used dirty water from washing clothes or prisoners' urine, and added cigarette ash. Later Qian ordered two prisoners to do the force-feeding, while he watched and gave orders.

To persecute practitioners, detention head Tao reopened cell No. 3 and told the blacksmith to fix iron loops to the ground. He ordered six people (prostitutes) to form a team and torture Falun Dafa practitioners on hunger strike, using the same torture methods as described above. They put the practitioners on the ground, stretched their limbs and chained them to the iron loops. Guards directed the prostitutes to use various torture methods, and awarded or reduced prison terms for their "good work." After Zhou Yanbo, Wei Yanhua and Qu Jun were tortured for half a day, they stopped the hunger strike, and were taken back to cells No. 5 and 6.

After 6:00 p.m. on October 20th, the guards took Ms. Liu Yumei from cell No. 7 to No. 3, and chained her to the ground with stretched limbs. They opened the windows widely, and took away the quilt to make sure that she was freezing (the weather in Northern China had turned cold and there was no heater). Prisoners did not allow her to sleep, and kicked and cursed her when she closed her eyes. Dr. Qian mixed corn paste with cold water and force-fed her with this mixture through a plastic tube. Her stomach was in excruciating pain. She wanted to urinate, but the prisoners were ordered not to help her. She could not hold the urine and urinated in her pants. The handcuffs and foot shackles were fixed to the iron loops on the ground, and she was unable to move or change clothes. She had to endure the wetness. These six prisoners changed every two days, but they still could not change her mind about the hunger strike. On the ninth day, she was carried back to cell No. 7 and the people left. Alas, she was still fixed to ground in the same position. When fellow practitioners saw her messy appearance, with corn paste all over her face and head, and with numb and swollen hands and feet, they cried. Some wiped her face, some brushed her hair, some cleaned her clothes, and some massaged her hands and feet.

The guards brought in eight prostitutes and formed two teams. There were two cells with a total of eight prisoners and practitioners. Head Tao, who is in charge of the detention centre, work area and asylum, ordered seven or eight people to install torture equipment and iron loops in these two cells. He again chained Ms. Liu Yumei to the ground. After 9:00 p.m., Qian Dapeng and two prisoners force-fed her again. They were foul-mouthed and smashed her head to the ground. They stepped on her arms and sat on her legs, grabbed her hair, held her face, and barbarically inserted a tube into her nose. When it reached her throat, she vomited. They repeatedly inserted the tube until one of her nostrils and her throat were injured severely and bled. Then they pulled out the tube and inserted it through the other nostril. Sometimes she almost suffocated from it. The procedure caused her excruciating stomach pain, ringing in the ears and a swollen throat. They finally took her to the hospital for emergency treatment.

After 10:00 p.m. on November 15th, Ms. Liu brought up liquid from her stomachache. The inmates were sleeping. Prostitute Kang Qiuju thought that Ms. Liu's face did not look good, and reported to the guards who took Ms. Liu to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Dr. Qian hit her face when he saw her, and cursed her. Her face became swollen for an entire week. Qian said to others, "It's all right! It is not too late to bring her to the hospital after she has died in the detention centre. We just need to confirm her death." Without the hospital's permit, the guards took her back for further torture.

In the beginning, they force-fed Ms. Liu Yumei three times per day. They inserted the tube every time. Four or five days later, they left the plastic tube in her stomach and took it out and re-inserted the tube only once a week. They changed the tube after over twenty days. The tube in her stomach caused excruciating pain. When the tube was pulled out, it fell apart. The top of the tube changed from white to milky yellow, and the lower portion turned black, and was mouldy. She was on a hunger strike and tortured for 62 days. Her arms, feet and legs were very swollen and she lost all feeling. Her muscles withered and she was totally emaciated. She was bailed out for medical treatment. Her family was notified and picked her up on December 9th, 2002.

Arrested in April 2005 - Got Out after 25 Days

After 9:00 p.m. on April 1st, 2005, between eight and nine people broke into Ms. Liu Yumei's home. Two people grabbed her arms and cuffed them behind her back, while the others searched everywhere. They threw the quilt on the floor and stole the child's mobile phone. The child asked to have it back, but they refused. The police wanted to take Ms. Liu with them. The child asked, "Where are you from? Where are you taking my mother?" The police said, "We are from Fushun City National Security Bureau." They did not let her talk. They feared that others would hear them. The child held her mother and said, "My mother is not guilty. We are persecuted. Remember Falun Dafa is good. Don't hate them (the policemen), they are also poisoned and used. One day everything will be clear, no matter what you do, you place yourself in your own position."

The police quietly took Ms. Liu downstairs and put her into the car. There were about six cars and over ten plainclothes police officers downstairs, surrounding the building. They pushed her into a passenger vehicle and took her to the National Security Section 1 for interrogation. They asked who gave her the VCD exposing the persecution and the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party 3, and with whom she kept contact. She refused to answer. She ceaselessly explained the truth, told them that good will be rewarded and evil will receive retribution, told them the story of the wheeler and the horse, and advised them that everyone was positioning themselves, and so on. One policeman said, "You are talking too much. You are not allowed talk. After we finish eating (alcohol, meat, BBQ and other food was on the office desk), you will see what we are going to do. We will use the electric baton on you." She replied, "I know who you are! You are the murderer of practitioner Li Ying. It was published on the Minghui website (Chinese version of Clearwisdom.net) three days ago." The police said, "Li Ying died from heart disease." She answered, "She was not sick before she came here. A healthy person died after she came here."

A policeman (probably the head) realised that she was not scared, so he changed to being kind, "You cooperate with us, and we will take you for two days of re-education and then let you go home. You continue to do what you normally do, and give us information. We need money." She laughed, and thought, "Don't you realise who I am?" Police kept asking her where she got the Nine Commentaries and all the Dafa books. Her hands were cuffed to a heating pipe and she was interrogated until after 5:00 a.m. the next day. She did not cooperate with them and so they left.

At about 8:00 a.m., another police officer came and asked for her name. Ms. Liu did not answer, and instead asked him, "What's your surname?" He replied, "You did not tell me, and yet still ask me." She said, "Don't you know my name? I was taken here when I was sleeping at home. Aren't you asking something you already know?" He took an electric baton from the drawer and asked her, "What's this, do you know?" Police Zhang Tao tortured her at the mouth and nose with the electric baton. Later, Ms. Liu asked, "Do you have parents? Are you married, with children?" The officer asked, "What do you mean?" She answered, "You can't treat Falun Dafa practitioners like this. Do good deeds and your parents and children will have good fortune! Do bad deeds your parents and children will be implicated." He said, "Don't tell me such things. I am a university graduate student." She said, "You did not study at the right place and learn how to be a human. Although you torture me like this, I do not hate you." He said, "I treat you as a class enemy." She answered, "I treat you as a brother. Because your brain is not here, you are used, but you will ultimately suffer."

Police stole over 550 yuan and an MP3 player from Ms. Liu. At noon they let her go after they filled out the form and took her fingerprints by force.

On April 2, the police detained Ms. Liu at a Women's Self-Improvement School. She explained the truth to police and detainees, told them how she was arrested, and how her home was ransacked, and that police stole many of her belongings. She told them that the police disabled her (she suffered fractures in three places). They were very sympathetic, and understood the government officials' depravity. They were very indignant. The prisoners helped Ms. Liu to use the bathroom, and often told her the time (there is no clock in the cell) for sending forth righteous thoughts. They learned Dafa songs from her. One day it thundered and they ran to the Falun Dafa practitioners, "If we are with Falun Dafa practitioners we are protected." They said that they wanted to learn Falun Gong after they got out, and told others the news of "heaven wants to eliminate the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)."

On April 18, Ms. Liu Yumei was transferred to Luotaishanzhuang Brainwashing Centre in Fushun. Because she lay on the car seat, staff at the brainwashing centre saw that she was not healthy. They refused to accept her, so she was taken back to the Women's Self-Improvement School. The school also refused to accept her. The police then took her to the National Security Section No. 1. She had a bad stomachache in the car, and thus lay on the floor of the car. In the afternoon, the police forcibly took her to Luotaishanzhuang Brainwashing Centre in Fushun. The education assistants were former practitioners who had turned against the practise. People there were mostly the unemployed from the Fushun Mine Transportation Department, who were paid 400 yuan monthly, plus accommodation and meals.

At night, a guard in his fifties said to her, "I know you, Liu Yumei. Do you know how you came here?" Ms. Liu asked him, "I do not know you, what's your surname, where do you work?" He replied, "I worked at the city politics and judiciary committee before. I have been transferred here to do 'transformation' work." She said, "What law did I breach when I slept at home? I was arrested after 10:00 p.m. and my home was ransacked. They stole my VCD, mobile phone, cash and bankbook." He said, "Didn't you do anything else?" She replied, "What's wrong with learning Falun Dafa and teaching people to be kind? I was taken here for brainwashing. How can you dig out things from the brain? It is fruitless." He listened and nodded.

Ms. Liu also clarified the truth to people who helped at the centre, "Don't help these people to do bad deeds. Treat Falun Dafa practitioners kindly. You will have good fortune. It is also an opportunity to place yourself in the right position."

Ms. Liu did not give up on former practitioners who had turned bad. She told them, "Teacher is still giving lectures abroad. Teacher and Dafa are here, but you help others 'transform' practitioners. You are like clowns who are trying to persuade others. It is a personal issue to study or not. But one must regard the Fa as master. You are more of a hindrance than a help." These people stopped trying to persuade her.

Ms. Liu sent forth righteous thoughts every hour each day. Lei Feng, the class monitor Qiao Anshan and the municipal party committee official of the politics and judiciary committee came to this place. Someone said, "Liu Yumei, open your eyes, municipal party committee officials came to see you." She lay in bed and did not say anything, but kept sending forth righteous thoughts.

Ms. Liu's health turned for the worse. She was tortured for twenty five days, from April 1 to April 25. She vomited blood, had blood in her urine, had unstable blood pressure and her life was in danger. The police had to release her.

This time, a fellow practitioner had given police her name under torture. On the night of April 1, he brought nearly twenty policemen in about six cars from Fushun National Security Bureau to ransack three residences of Liu Yumei's. No one was home at two of the residences. They pried the door open and stole Falun Dafa books, tapes and VCDs, a set of luggage, a VCD player, an 18K golden necklace, a multipurpose recorder, Shuangjian high-quality electrical clippers, a high-quality telescope, a windproof cigarette lighter, three mobile phones, two high-quality pens, a palm, an MP3 player, six plumber's pipe wrenches in large, medium and small sizes, two wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers and so on. They also stole the child's school fee of 1,500 yuan, the bankbook, all certificates, an electric coin card, all money -- everything the family owned. They even stole the small daily necessities such as a needlework box, the child's study equipment, and large and small dictionaries.

In March and April, the Fushun National Security Bureau arrested over 100 Falun Dafa practitioners. Over fifty of them were detained at the Women's Self-Improvement School. Most of the practitioners were villagers from Xinbin and Qingyuan. They took them while doing their daily chores, building a house and planting trees at the mountain. Some had just bought a young chicken. One practitioner's father had just passed away and he was mourning by the side of the coffin at the time of the arrest. The police tortured practitioners during the interrogation. When they interrogated Gao Shijie, an older lady, in her sixties, and Wang Xizhong (female, 56), they cuffed their hands, put on foot shackles, hung them up, split their legs wide, tore open Ms. Gao's cotton-wadded trousers and tortured her with electric batons. Her eyes were swollen and her forehead was purple. Her legs were injured and she could no longer stand. Ms. Wang's entire body was tortured with electric batons during interrogation. Police lit cigarettes and inserted them into Ms. Wang's nostrils. They poured white wine into her and she almost suffocated. They even tore Teacher's picture from a Dafa book and put them under Ms. Wang's belly. Police sexually abused young female practitioner Ma Xizhong, said dirty words, touched her upper body, tortured her with electric batons and punched and kicked her. She became muddle-headed, was disgusted, and vomited. Most practitioners were wounded or disabled from the torture.

After the persecution began on July 20, 1999, Ms. Liu Yumei's family was continuously harassed at all times of the day and night. The police smashed in the door, broke into their place and ransacked it. They disturbed the neighbours. Her husband and child did not dare to stay at home. Her husband's heart suffered due to fear. He does not dare to turn the light on at night, he cooks in the bathroom, and fears that the police see that someone is home, and will come to search again. He can't sleep after hearing the sound of a police siren, and his heart beats rapidly. They go to their relatives' home, but dare not to stay long to avoid implicating others. They have no choice but to rent another place, move around and sometimes move two to three times per year. Despite this, they are still being harassed and their home is ransacked often. They have become homeless.
