My Experiences on Tiananmen Square
By German practitioner Caroline Kuerper

As a Western Falun Gong practitioner, it was totally out of my free will to go to Tiananmen Square on behalf of the Chinese fellow practitioners, who have been subjected to persecution for almost three years. Here I came to the real place. Here I came to such a historical place. Here has seen countless people who have been calling for help for freedom and for Falun Gong.

It seemed that the fine day was expecting us to come here. Under the sunshine, many tourists were on their way to the Forbidden City for sightseeing, and others just wandered around the Tiananmen Square. However it was also an extraordinary day, in the sense that many policemen were fixing their eyes on people. I could almost sense that they came for us. At the beginning I was not completely sure. We were still hesitating, and we wondered if the seven of us German practitioners should spread open the banner together or hold smaller banners individually. We saw that about 200 metres away from us, as soon as someone seated himself down, a bunch of policemen kicked him over. Although I had always seen from photographs how the practitioners were beaten up on the Square, I could not help being shocked by witnessing their brutality. At the scene it occurred to me that I should stand up to them and stop them from humiliating people like that. All of a sudden this thought defeated my hesitation, and gave me the power.

Immediately I withdrew a metre long banner from my jacket which said, “Falun Dafa is good!” I spread the banner open and held it high, singing the song “Falun Dafa is good” at the same time. In less than five seconds two policemen came over to grab my banner. They then caught me under their arms on both sides. I did not stop singing. Then a third policeman came to cover my mouth. At that moment I only had one single thought on my mind: I had to let more people hear this song that I was singing. Before I was caught, a female fellow practitioner was held onto the ground, and other fellow practitioners were being dragged into the police van. But the van was full and there was no space for me. I made use of this precious moment for singing in front of people. This very brief moment, however, felt like a really long period of time to me.

At that moment I simply wished that the people in front of me could understand what I was singing. I wished that they would think over how the innocent and peaceful people have been persecuted in the past three years. I wished that they could realise the fact that they had been fooled by their own government to a ridiculous degree. Indeed so many lies were told by the government only to drag them to the anti-Falun Gong side. I wished that they could thoroughly think over why I would come all the way here to sing such a song to them!

Now I have returned to Germany and I can tell people here about the brutal and inhumane persecution that the Falun Gong practitioners have been subjected to. Now I can answer the question that people often raise: Have you been to China yourself? I can answer aloud, “Yes I have personally experienced the persecution.”
