Ms. Liu Shuzhen, a 50-year-old Dafa practitioner from Harbin City, began cultivating Falun Dafa in early 1996. After she began practising, her heart problems and asthma were completely healed. Since then, she has persevered in cultivating in Dafa. In December 2000, Ms. Liu went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa but was instead imprisoned for more than two months. On October 14th, 2004, she was reported to the authorities while explaining the true situation of Falun Dafa at a supermarket and was arrested by policemen from the Anbu Police Station. She was sentenced to three years of re-education through labour and imprisoned in the Seventh Team of the Wanjia Labour Camp.

On July 15th, 2005, after Liu Shuzhen refused to recite prison rules that defame Dafa, the on-duty policemen Li Changjie brought her to an isolated room and gave her six slaps on her face while shouting vulgarities at her.

On July 28th, Liu Shuzhen was once again brought into an isolated room and abused by policemen Zhao Yuqing. Because Liu Shuzhen declared that her Guarantee Statement1 was nullified, Zhao Yuqing gave her three slaps and tied up her hands with a rope. He then pulled the rope quickly as he walked and suddenly released the rope to make Ms. Liu fall hard onto the floor. Liu Shuzhen was repeatedly subjected to this form of physical abuse.

On August 8th, for the same reason, Ms. Liu was called out into the open after being verbally abused by policeman Jia Cuiyan. She was handed over to the team leader Yao Fuchang and beaten in an isolated room. Her back and legs were shocked were electric batons in several areas. Many parts of her body turned purple with wounds and she was slapped in the face.

In the morning of August 20th, for refusing to recite the prison rules, policewoman Yu Fangli started beating her up brutally. Liu Shuzhen was slapped 7 to 8 times and forced to squat on a single piece of brick.

Thereafter, Liu Shuzhen was tied up on a bed with her hands bound behind her back and left in a squatting position for seven days and seven nights. She became disabled as a result. A year has passed, and even today she still cannot walk properly and sways when she walks.

Because she remains firm in her belief in Dafa, even though Liu Shuzhen's husband is a mental patient and has been left home unattended, the Wanjia Labour Camp and the 610 Office2still refuse to release her. In the less than one year of time that she has been imprisoned, her husband has thrown away their family bed, as well as clothes and other domestic items. Even the toilet bowl has been smashed. Only a single metal pole remains sticking out from the bathroom floor.

Liu Shuzhen's sister has serious heart disease and would visit her in the labour camp once in a while (Ms. Liu's brother-in-law died earlier this year from illness on the second day of the Chinese New Year). Even though Liu Shuzhen's neighbours, colleagues, and members of the community resident council have asked the labour camp to release her on several occasions, but to no avail.

Recently, when Liu Shuzhen's family members saw her, she had to be carried by prison staff and could not use her own hands to hold the phone. Someone else had to hold the phone for her, and only a few sentences could be exchanged. Currently, Ms. Liu's family is trying to appeal to get her out of the prison.

Note

1. "Guarantee Statement": A statement to declare that one is remorseful for practising Falun Gong and guarantees not to practise Falun Gong again, not to go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, and never again associate with any Falun Dafa practitioners.

2. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
