Support for Baby Minghui Made Stateless by the Chinese Government

Baby Minghui’s parents both practice Falun Gong. Minghui was born in the UK and when her parents tried to register her with the Chinese embassy in London, they were told this would only be done on condition they renounce their practice of Falun Gong. Consequently, Minghui has been made stateless. The following letters show support from UK councillors for the human rights of Minghui and the Falun Gong practitioners in China:

Letter 1

Dear Ms MO

Re:‘Baby Minghui campaign:’ your letter of 3rd September 2001

Just to wish you good luck in your campaign, and to say that I agree that China’s repression of the practice of Falun Gong is immoral.

There is nothing I can really do in my capacity as a local councillor, other than to sign the petition form to the UN Commissioner for Human Rights; which I have gladly done.

Best wishes

Jonathan Edwards (signed)

(Borough Councillor, Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council)

Letter 2

Dear Ms Zengfang Mo

RE:FALUN GONG

I would like to thank you for your letter dated 3 September 2001. I was extremely moved by the contents of your letter. I would just like to say that I wish you and your family all the best for the future. I am quite sure the Chinese Authority will come to their senses and will allow everyone who wants to practice Falun Gong in China to do so. It is important that the Chinese Government should allow every person the freedom of speech and to practice any religion/meditation that they wish.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

Yours sincerely

RAMESH PATEL
COUNCILLOR FOR CANTON

Letter 3

Dear Ms. Mo,

Baby Minghui

Thank you for your letter dated 3rd September, which was not received in my office until 4th October.

Your story is truly shocking and I find it very sad that this sort of persecution still goes on in our modern world.

I have attached your petition sheet duly signed and would like to wish you and baby Minghui the very best of luck with your Campaign.

Yours sincerely,

COUNCILLOR RAY HARRIS (signed)

Leader of the Council
London Borough of Havering

Letter 4

Dear Ms. Mo,

Thank you for your letter and other material concerning the Falun Gong movement and the Chinese Government’s refusal to grant citizenship to your daughter.

I agree that it is quite wrong for any government to mistreat an innocent citizen in this way. I am pleased to support your petition and I will also write in support of your campaign to the UN Human Rights Commissioner.

(Message written in Chinese)

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Richard Vivian (signed)
London Borough of Wandsworth

Letter 5

Dear Ms Zhengfang

Thank you so much for your letter to me concerning your campaign against the persecution of minorities by the Chinese government.

I am particularly delighted that you chose to write to me, as Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Leicester City Council, because we have raised a number of issues in relation to human rights in China, not least because of this authority’s links with Chongqing.

The issues you raised in your letter are somewhat specific and it is probably sensible if we discuss these individually, probably over the phone. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to provide further information on this particular campaign.

In the meantime may I once again thank you very much for writing to me as I am particularly delighted that the concern of my Group on the City Council over the issue of human rights in China has clearly been recognised as far afield as the north bank of the River Tay.

Yours sincerely

Councillor Roger Blackmore (signed)

Leader, Liberal Democrat Group
Leicester City Council

Letter 6

Dear Mrs Zhengfang

PERSECUTION OF THE PRACTITIONERS OF FALUN GONG

Thank you for your letter on the repressive attitude of the Chinese Government towards
Falun Gong. I do support your cause and will assist you and all your comrades. Tiananmen Square was an affront to all civilised people.

Yours sincerely

Councillor Ron Grahame (signed)
Leeds City Council
