I am Yang Lijuan, 55, and I live in Jilin City, Jilin Province. I was arrested on August 25th, 2005.

1. Police Illegally Entered the House Using Deception, Confiscated Personal Property and Arrested the Innocent Without Warrant

When I got up at about 6:00 a.m. on August 25th, 2005, I heard the noise of knocking on the door and the voice of someone decrying a burglar. They deceived my 80-year-old mother to open the door for them and then suddenly rushed into my bedroom. A tall and strong man, showing me his card with the name of Di Shigang, held me down, handcuffed me without any warrant, and confiscated my mobile phone, MP3 player and camera, etc. They took me away wearing just a vest and underwear. After filling out a form at the police station, I was transferred to the criminal police section located on Sichuang Road.

They confiscated our personal property without showing a warrant or obtaining a signature from my family members. When my mother asked to get the property back, no one acknowledged the confiscation. They asked a neighbour of mine who did not know the true facts of the incident to sign the document. When my mother asked the neighbour what the police officials took away, the neighbour was very repentant, "I did not notice what they took. They asked me to sign something, and I simply signed it."

Responsible person:
Yu Yong, director of Shuangji Police Station, Jilin City: 86-13089158800 (mobile)
Xu Luqing, police official handling the case: 86-13844632777 (mobile)
Liu Jiwei: 86-13674320000 (mobile)
Liu Yuhe, instructor
Ma Yulong, Zhang Lijuan
Yang Jianxin, vice squad: 86-432-2485263

2. Confession Extorted by Torture

1) When:
From 2:00-3:00 p.m. to midnight, August 25th, 2005, the torture lasted nearly ten hours, except when they went out to have dinner at about 9:00 p.m.

2) Where and who:
Interrogation room, second floor of vice squad, five to six persons including Di Shigang.

3) How:
The tortures used included lock-up in an iron chair, handcuffing behind the back, force-feeding of mustard water, grinding the anklebone, and grinding the calf bone using a steel pipe.

4) Torture process:
One man held my hair, the second man curbed my head upward with a towel, and the third man fed the mustard water into my nostril. I could not help coughing and vomiting. One of them wiped my face with a dirty rag and another man smeared my face with a mop after cleaning the floor. Midway through, he wiped the toilet with that mop and smeared my face again. After feeding me 100 millilitres of mustard water, they changed my back-cuffed posture. The handcuff dug into my flesh and I was then locked onto an iron chair, where I was unable to struggle. They also beat me about the head. During the forced feeding process, Di Shigang also ground my anklebone, which caused tearing pain, and he ground my calf bone using a steel pipe. This produced a six-inch long black and blue scar. I was fed six to seven bottles of mustard water and was tortured until I was close to death. Persecutor Di Shigang threatened me saying, "You told your mother to remember my name, but she cannot. What a pity! No one will be liable for beating you to death."

5) Fabricating false photos to frame me:

The white cloth that was used to cover the clothes in the cabinet was viciously taken to make a banner. An old scrubbing brush was distorted as a tool to paint the banner, a woodworking tool was used as a knife to cut the banner, and the watercolours my child used for drawing were used as paint for making the banner. Additionally, the less than ten pages of my manuscripts were described as "hundreds of hand-written flyers" to falsely incriminate me.

They used enticement to extort a confession. Finally, I was tortured to the point of mental trauma. Sometimes I was clear and sometimes I was muddleheaded due to the psychological tortures that affected my brain. I remember that they first forced me to sign several confessions, and then had me sign hundreds of confessions until there were enough for them to convict me.

On August 26th, I was sent to the No. 3 Detention Centre in Jilin City. I was very weak and delirious. All of the detainees and guards who saw my wounded body were shocked and said, "It was too brutal, expose them, we will vouch for you." The detention centre made a record of my exterior wounds for me.

At that time, my health condition was as follows: 1) my brain was in a comatose state, I had a headache, and I could not open my eyes. 2) The lower part of my face, nose, mouth and jaw were injured, and I could not open my mouth to eat. The lower part of my face was severely traumatised and did not heal until eighteen days later in the detention centre. 3) There were bruises about six inches long and two inches wide on the lower part of both legs which have still not healed. 4) There were bruises about six inches long and four inches wide on both of my thighs, which were still visible even six months later. 5) There was a large area of bruises on my back below my shoulders. 6) My back was injured with scars remaining. 7) Scars were left on both of my wrists due to the handcuffs cutting into the flesh of my hands. 8) There were several scars left on the back of my palms due to handcuffs. 9) During the persecution, both of my hands were pulled backwards and then handcuffed several times, which caused injuries to my arms. I now have difficulty and experience pain when raising my arms behind me. 10) Both of my hands and arms were numb and lacked strength. I could not even form a fist with my hands, and my hands trembled. It took about four months for this symptom to disappear, but I still lack strength in holding my fists today.

I appealed to the judiciary authorities but did not get any response. Shuangji Police Station fabricated false evidence, extorted my confession by torture and sentenced me to one and a half years of forced labour. On September 23rd, 2005, they sent me to the Women's Forced Labour Camp in Jilin Province.

3. Bring the Persecutors to Justice

As the victim, I request legal protection, not only to protect my legal human rights, but also to safeguard the dignity of law and constitution of this country. Therefore, I demand that the persecutors be brought to justice, the real violators punished, all of the fabricated accusations withdrawn, and an immediate and unconditional release.

I am responsible for the facts described above.
