The former UK Chancellor Kenneth Clarke QC MP wrote to Falun Gong practitioners on 29 January 2002. He said, "I can assure you that I do sympathise fully with the plight of people who are being persecuted for the practice of Falun Gong in China."

Referring to a practitioner who had suffered much human rights abuse, he said "I hope that she does not experience any further action against her on the basis of her beliefs"

Mr Clarke pledges that "If I do get any sensible opportunity of lobbying the Chinese Authorities on the subject in any way which might be effective, I will certainly do so."
